Loo-Kistic or Loo-Systic?

Well trying to be a smart @$$ i decided to look up the word leucistic..but i realized it isnt in the dictionary...so i did some more looking to see if it was even a word and I stumbled upon wikipedia :)

and now I am confused again because I thought it was Loo-Systic myself...but Loo-Cism sounds kinda weird :(

I pronounce it loo-sist-ic. But, then again, I pronounce wash as worsh so what do I know . . . .

I usually pronounce it as "pretty white snake I'll never own but can bloody well dream about" :D

Hahaha this reminds me of one time I was in my photography class, and we had a sub so we had to watch a bloody video, and the guy kept saying "worsh" and I was trying so hard not to laugh. HAHA! I love accents! Simply amazing. :D

As for me, Loo- sistic XD

I have the worst accent of all- the Chicago accent. Whenever i'm out of state people automatically know where i'm from 'cause i'm such a windbag from the windy city. :D
Hot dog= Haat daag
Sausage= saasage
star= staah
city= ciety
So nasal-ey! AHH!

i call them blue/black eye lucy's for short

I'm still trying to figure out where I picked that up. Course, I was an army brat so it could've been from many different places. I love accents . . .

That is how i pronounce it. Which is right, i suppose that depends on what part of the country (or world) you are in.

Yes, you're absolutely right. The correct pronunciation is loo-kiss-tic. But, I'm a scientist, so I've been indoctrinated with Sci jargon for decades.

Watch enough hillbillies on U-Tube and you will get even more confused.

I have seen/heard people use the word and pronounce every vowel...

I studied under a veterinarian and herpetologist. He had a blog that was lost for a while due to a server crash. He has just recently got a new blog and his first post was about lucism.

I have to say that he is right, since completing vet school and dealing with researchers and vets, I can say that if you say loo-sis-tic people talk about you, and not in a good way. They say you are ignorant or (as one herpetologist said it) a "Philistine."

Again, it depends on where you're from. The vets here call them loo-sys-tics, and they'd give you funny looks if you'd pronounce it a different way.

That is why it should have been spelled Leukistic from the start. As Dr. Walden pointed out, the leuc- prefix is the Latin version that was borrowed (since there was no K in Classical Latin and c always had the K sound) from Greek. The Greek was leukos.

For that reason the word can also be correctly spelled with the Greek prefix leuk-.

That is why I generally spell it leukism and leukistic. It helps those that are not well educated in medical and scientific terminology to pronounce it correctly.

Here in North Carolina there is a town called Gastonia. The correct way to say it is "Gas-toe-nee-a", but most mis-pronounce it as " Gassed on ya"... :rofl:


Another commonly mis-pronounced city is Tokyo. It is a 2 syllable word "To-kyo", not the popular "To-kee-o"

On the west coast we have a town called "Strathhaven" - it is pronounced Stray-vin to the confusion of even other scotsmen.
