WOW...
I read this from front to back, even the "whacky care sheet" and I've gotta say
Thank You, jwk811, for making me feel smarter than the average herp keeper.
I find it interesting to watch your attitude towards people who seriously care about what happens to your poor snake.
And I really don't mean to sound harsh, but I could have wrote a better care sheet, and I only have around 5 years experience with two snakes!
Good luck in your snake adventures, hope his tiny little bite doesn't hurt your pride too much.:snake:

Re: My Snake Scares the Hell Out Of ME!
Hopefully this thread will stay up. Everyone here has only tried to help you. They have given you great advice and have showed you right from wrong. If you care to listen and learn you will then have the correct knowledge on ball pythons. If you care to turn your nose up and walk away, don't be surprised if people don't hope the door hits you in the.... you know what. There are a lot of GREAT people here with YEARS AND YEARS of breeding snakes and they have tons of knowledge on these great animals! I know I learn something new here just about everyday. I think that is one of the few main reasons why I keep coming back. :)

Like adam said...
Seriously though, any snake can rarely bite. Any snake can be a He!! raiser.

I don't see anything wrong with well started CHs.

I BEG to differ.
Quote:
The size of the cage should be around 36" x 12". It can be bigger than that, but it can't be too much smaller. Although snakes like to feel safe and secure in smaller cages they also need to be able to stretch out..
Hmm, then I guess my 1960 tubs are too small then. Time to switch to aquariums...NOT
Quote:
Other types of cage floor you can use are wood shaving, special cage carpeting or even newspaper. I wouldn't recommend using newspaper, it's not very natural and the ink could irritate the snake. If you don't have anything better to use newspaper is alright.
We aren't talking about leopard geckos.

One or more hide boxes are definently required. .
TWO or more hideboxes are required.

During the day the temperature of the cage should be within 80F and 85F, with a warm spot of 90F. During the night the temperature should drop down to around 75F with a warm spot of 80F. .
Is this a joke?
Quote:
To keep these temperatures at these specifics you should use a heating lamp and a heating pad. .
Without a thremostat? I keep my temps fine with a heat pad and dimmer thank you... Soon to be flexwatt and a thermostat.
Quote:
You will need to use at least two thermometers one at the warm spot and the other somewhere else in the cage to make sure you have the right temperature. You do not want your snake to over-heat or freeze.
Only if you use those crappy analog thermometers...
Quote:
Ball Pythons will eat rodents. You should feed your snake pre-killed mice.
It doesn't matter, live OR F/T is fine...
Quote:
Young (14"-24") should feed on: (small-medium) Fuzzy Mice once a week........ Sub Adult ("24-48"): should feed on: Lg. Mice-Fuzzy Rats once every two weeks.
Adult (48"+): should feed on: (small-medium) Rats once every two weeks.
How would you know how big my snake's girth is?
Quote:
If you were thinking about feeding live mice you may want to re-think that. Live mice may injure your snake as they will use self-defense before they go down.
Mice pretty much can't do as much as rats, yes they can bite, but it won't hurt your snake severely, unless bitten in the eye or on the head, etc.
Quote:
You should have a separate cage specially for your snake for feeding. A separate cage will decrease the chance of your snake thinking your fingers are food and will know that he needs to be in it's feeding cage to eat.
Says who?? A seperate feeding cage is a waste of hard earned money.
Quote:
You can try feeding gerbils or hamsters or even try feeding life food. I don't think this would happen with the snakes that I am selling because they are used to feeding on pre-killed mice and have been in captivity all their lives.
... Ever heard of IMPRINT FEEDERS??
Quote:
Your snake will need a water dish large enough to soak in and heavy enough that it can't be knocked over. This will be important during sheds. You may see your snake drink once and a while as well. Water should be changed regularly.
If your snake is soaking alot, then check for mites, they shouldn't soak unless shedding...
Not an attack at jwk111. I know you didn't write it...

Re: My Snake Scares the Hell Out Of ME!
http://www.boxchamp.com/forum/style_...champ/1034.gif jwk811 , I hate to say it but you really do need to start again. Listen and learn I dont know how long you have been keeping snakes or indeed been a member here but seriously .....after your nap http://www.boxchamp.com/forum/style_...xchamp/199.gif you really need to take on board what everyone is telling you and dont take it as people trying to make you look stupid ( unfortunately your doing a good job of that yourself by your response ) http://www.boxchamp.com/forum/style_...oxchamp/45.gif
My advice is to start from scratch as your info is so far off the mark its hardly visable http://www.boxchamp.com/forum/style_...xchamp/eek.gif
there are plenty of people on here that will help you if you want to learn including myself but you really have to make an effort to try to learn and listen to what people are telling you ..........its no coincidence everyone is saying the same thing you know.........honest ! :D
Now get yourself a caresheet pal and check on your snake some of your info was worryingly bordering on dangerous to a snakes health.

Re: My Snake Scares the Hell Out Of ME!
you guys do make a lot of sense but you've got to remember that i only wrote these based on all the things i have read and heard from pet stores as well before. i didnt go making this up the other websites must have been giving me wrong info as you we saying as well as the pet store people.. and i know that sounds like sarcasm lol but its not. should have heard what you guys thought before i wrote that. understand? well im going to be buying several tubs and build some kind of rack for each of my balls so it wont be as hard and itll stay warm through the winter. i havent even gone through i winter will any snakes so i wouldnt know how cool it would get in there in the big enclosures with the outside temp being so low. most tub enclosures ive seen are pretty basic.. just a hide out, water dish lined with newspaper or some substrate are the pics ive seen on here and repticzone and of course all the heating supplies.. can i ask how you guys heat the tubs in the rack.. just the heating tape? they dont need light or what? and i have wrote those care sheets a while ago when i went over it again it did seem kinda bad, lol. sorry for getting so upset its just you guys were making it seem like i just came into all of this without knowing what to do or havent researched when in fact i did so much to make sure i had everything all set up right and that i was aware of everything and tried to learn everything i could

Re: My Snake Scares the Hell Out Of ME!
Hey Jon,
I know you meant well, but unfortunately there is a lot more to keeping snakes and giving sound advice than good intentions. Most of the regulars on this site are passionate about their snakes, and Balls in particular. It's frustrating for most people to have to put up with people spreading regurged incorrect info time and time again, and when you put out a caresheet with such little experience, it tends to get more than a few people's panties in a bunch.
My advice would be to sit back, enjoy your snakes, ask questions, and keep learning and gaining first-hand experience.

Re: My Snake Scares the Hell Out Of ME!
Another thing dont go trying to probe your bp again keep away from attempting that until you have gained enough experience , seeing you only had it a week you shouldnt even be handling it. Listen to the advice you have been giving in these posts , if you want to know the sex of your bp then the best thing to do is get it feeding for a few months first then take your bp to a qualified herp vet or breeder thats knows what there doing :)
p.s i hope those probes you got off ebay were the right size and were sterilised beforehand

Re: My Snake Scares the Hell Out Of ME!
My advice to you is to be sure you fine reliable sources for your research. Go for successful big breeder sites, a lot of them have care sheets and FAQ's. Also, make sure the info is up to date, not a page written 10 years ago.
