He was one of the first that brought reptiles into the light as great creatures that did not have to feared when his shows started in the early 1990's. With his presence on screen, he gave many people a facination with reptiles and opened the doors for other characters like Jeff Corwin, etc.
Great guy and my prayers are with his family.

I couldn't agree more. Croc Hunter and similar shows on AP and NG are what 're-sparked' my interest in reptiles as well.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
My mom woke me up early this morning to tell me that guy on animal planet got killed!!! I was in shock but still went back to sleep because of my cold. I woke up later and said "Who died?". She says the crocodile hunter was killed at the great barrier reef. I knew I wasn't dreaming then. He holds the key to understanding the crocs like no other!!!:lockd:

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
I still find it hard to believe , his enthusiam was endless and he has done so much good for peoples perceptions of "usually" feared and hated animals such as snakes and crocs etc
A very sad day indeed , I am gutted for his kids being a family man myself it must be devestating for his family.
I am sure his work has inlfuenced many others to follow in his footsteps and continue to spread knowledge and understanding of all creatures his life may have been cut short but his work will continue on through others that have shared his company and been touched by his passion.
RIP Steve Irwin ,a life certainly lived to the full.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
Not even the herp world! He would do stuff with any kind of animal and he sparked interests in birds, felines, herps, fish and all other types of animals.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
Just had to chuckle thinking of Steve Irwin's love of all creatures and how he'd fearlessly wrestle crocs yet have troubles with the oddest animals. Does anyone remember the show where they had him handling some black cockatoo's. Oh it was hilarious how those birds hated poor Steve and how he jumped from their big sharp beaks. Those birds knew how to get the best of Steve LOL. Just wanted to interject a note of humor here to honor a man that had a huge well of laughter in him and never seemed to take his "star" status very seriously.
Thanks Steve Irwin - for the education, the ooohhhh's and the ahhhh's, the "holy crap that snake's going to nail him" and for the laughter too.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
Was it monday he was killed? A good internet friend of mine is Australian and midnight here is pretty much late afternoon there(next day)- was it yesterday or this morning U.S. time?
It kills me he's gone. My boyfriend told me a guy at work told him- I was like "yeah right". All i can think of is his wife and two young kids.
I really never did expect any animal to take him out. Reckless or not he knew what he was doing imo. This was really just a freak accident. Very upsetting-
and i saw that episode with the black cockatoos- they were hilarious! he seemed to pretty much have trouble with birds in general at his zoo.
-
Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
I too couldn't believe the news. I was told by a friend and all I could say was "What!?!" It's still sinking in. My prayers go out to his family and friends.
-
Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
Very shocking! I expected an animal to be his demise, but not a stingray. It's going to be rough on his wife and kids.
Have to respect the man for all he's done.:(

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
i just saw a piece on entertainment tonight. they had the press release from steve's best friend and he was there (i think he's a producer or something as well as steve's friend) - and he said he was pretty sure it was instantanious and that steve died doing what he loved.
also, steve's daughter bindi has her own tv show and he was with her taping a spot for her show... so that's nice that he was with his family on his last day (not away on a shoot)

His best mate, Wes? He goes on and on about Wes on his shows and how muc respect he has for him.
Terri wasn't there when he went, though. She was hiking in New Zealand... can you imagine hearing that terrible news after going out hiking like that :(
I was talking about it at work with a buddy who's a security guard for the mall and we were talking about how we loved to watch his show, and a lady shopping in my store was from Beerwah and knew him and his family. She was pretty shocked about it, and really sad, but she said she was confident that Bindi would carry on with the Zoo and follow in her daddy's footsteps.

Discovery plans Croc Hunter tribute
Discovery Communications Inc is planning a tribute to the late Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, who died after being stung in the chest by a stingray on Monday.
Irwin, 44, was filming an underwater segment in north-eastern Australia when the incident occurred.
Reuters reports that Discovery, which enjoyed worldwide attention for its Animal Planet network thanks in no small measure to Irwin's programmes, plans a marathon screening of his 200+ appearances among other tributes.
The agency reported that Discovery intends to name a garden in its headquarters after Irwin, and to set up an education fund for his children, Bob and Bindi.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
Wow! I just found this out late this afternoon-and all I can say is that I am stunned and in tears over this news. I, like many of you, cannot believe the words that I was reading. All I could think of was his wife Terri and their two kids.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I still can't believe that it's true!

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
Wow, this is really tough on the kids. all three cried this morning when we heard. Alex has dressed as the Croc Hunter for the last three years at Halloween.
I know its been said many times, but I am glad he went doing what he loved.
RIP Steve .....

I was so shocked when I heard. I can't imagine the pain his family and friends are going through. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.
He brought a lot of attention to animals worldwide, and helped bring reptiles into a good light. He will be missed.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
I've been depressed all day since I heard the news this morning at work. I've watched Steve since I was a little girl, and I remember seeing sand boas for the first time on one of his shows.. years ago. He was fawning over them and saying how docile and wonderful they were.. I knew I had to have one some day. Now, years later I've got three of them.
I learned a lot by watching him and owe some of my passion for animals to him. I feel very bad for his family.. I can't imagine.
-
Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
I've been depressed all day too... Made an icon though, which was a little theraputic based off The Rainbow Bridge...
He was the one celeb I'd actually have loved to meet someday. Amazing enthusiastic guy with a lot of love...

written by steve irwin.
please pass this beautiful story on...
In 1997, on a balmy still September night in the tranquil Australian bushland of the Northern Territories Tomkinson River (near the township of Maningrida), a gorgeous 16-year-old girl named Annie is alerted to the dull mechanical thud of a vehicle heading her way. Feeling nervous and a little insecure, Annie quietly slips into her home and listens.
The noise of the oncoming vehicle is piercing and threatening in her normally quiet peaceful harmonious Aussie bush home. It keeps coming louder and louder, closer and closer. She waits and listens anxiously. Her nerves and adrenaline heighten to a point where she cant take it any longer. She has to look. As she takes a peek, a bright spot light temporarily blinds her. Completely confused and dazed shes not sure what to do. Before she can react, a searing pain strikes her in the neck as two long sharp barbs of steel penetrate deep into her flesh. She reels in pain back into the security and familiarity of her home. Tearing at the barbs deep in her neck, she feels the strain of a cord running from the barbs to the vehicle and male voices of excitement.
Four desperate adult men pull at the cord as they shout, "We got her. We got her. Hang on to her. Keep the strain on!" They tug on the cord knowingly. Those men know she cant get the barbs out and its just a matter of wearing her down and dragging her to them. Struggling and resisting with all her might, the poor helpless girl is dragged to what she fears is certain torture and death. Exhausted, breathless, totally blinded by a spotlight thats right in her eyes, she is so weak she can hardly move, so starved for energy and air shes virtually frozen in fear and pain. Being dragged by the neck from her home is so traumatic; she doesnt feel the noose go around her head.
Exhilarated by the hunt, revelling in the thrill of the chase and amused by the fight of their prey, totally oblivious to her pain and fear and without remorse, the men mercilessly pull her into the vehicle. They gaffer tape her legs together; tie her arms together behind her back; tape her eyes shut and have her mouth gagged. Very, very happy with their prey, they head for their hideout. The most beautiful of girls is bound so tight that she goes from numb to excruciating pain, yet unable to utter a sound. Almost totally incoherent from cramps and searing pain, she hears the men shout, "Theres another one. Lets get her!" Whack they drive in the barbs and reel another in. Shes even younger and barely an adolescent, easily manhandled, bound and thrown in the vehicle.
'Imagine poor little Annie's nightmare and torment as she lies in pain and fear when they pull up.' The men manhandle her to a dusty old shed; throw her on the ground and mill around smoking and laughing for what seems like hours. Then she hears it! Sssskkk a rifle is loaded and cocked. Annie feels the cold steel of the barrel touching her head. "No not there, you have to shoot them here one man exclaims." "Here?" the other man questions. "Yeah. Thats it, now angle it up towards her brain." "Yeah, thats it" he directs. BOOM! Her torture and torment is finally over but while shes still twitching, they skin her.
No one mourned the death of Annie. No one will shed a tear at her passing or even remember her. No one cares that Annie died so horrifically because Annie was a crocodile.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
I feel horribly for the loss of this caring individual who has done so much for the animal community. My thoughts are with his wife and two kids, may they continue the legend of animal conservation that Steve created. We should mourn the loss, but we should also strive to take his message where ever we go. RIP Steve

I feel SO bad for his wife and children. Who's going to teach Bob and Bindi about what he did now?

Every living creature whose world he touched...whether human, herp or any other species. It's up to all of us to continue his conservation efforts in whatever way we can, and honor his memory by doing so.

Shaun - I'm sure Teri, the zoo staff and those who were close friends to him will help teach his kids. Atleast I sure hope so. I hope those two grow up and follow some what in his foor steps.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
Read earlier today that Steve's last moments will be televised - at his own request, so he had contingency plans made for something like this happening. I wonder if Terri will narrate his last moments.
Thinking about him last night, I could not have imagined Steve growing old and infirm and incapable of doing what he loved so much. Going out of this world in the way he did he'll be forever young.
I read on the BBC forum yesterday some of the many tributes to him. It was amazing and heart-warming that in a world that is torn by wars and violence, one man could unite so many people from different countries and faiths, people who at the moment are otherwise enemies. In his passing, perhaps he's shown that there is hope for a peaceful world.

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
i thought i'd throw in my two cents to add to everyone else.
as cheesy as they can be, i loved watching his shows. there always seemed to be a great mix of excitement, natural history, and conservation in every one of his programs.
even though i grew up 'herping' and hanging out outdoors, his show was the first to really drive me to the level of appreciation that i'm at today...
rest in peace steve

Re: Crocodile Hunter killed in marine accident
I'm sure he had a will made up and everything already set aside just incase something like this would happen. I was wondering if they were going to show his last moments. I mean in a way I thought they would, but in another way in my opinion I'd like to remember Steve as a fast moving, happy go getter man who had a perfect family, a great great life that so many people can only dream and wiish of and a man with so much love who seemed so invincible. I's rather not watch his last moments here on Earth.

Yeah, but Bindi even said she wants to be like her daddy. It's real sad that it would be OTHER people teaching her to be like her father. :(
-
Re: Steve Irwin Tribute
Yes I know. It will be sad for that part, but remember she is part of her father so I'm sure it will come natural to her.
