now you mentioned sand boas before... any photos i can see? what are they like?

i'm so glad you don't mind me picking your brain but information from people who own a critter is just so much better sometimes that reading it off the net.

No problem.. I'm more than happy to share any knowledge I've stumbled upon.

I keep two species of sand boa. The kenyan, and roughscaled. They tame easily, and do not grow large at all. In fact, a male kenyan will stay small enough to be comfortable in a 10 gallon tank his entire life. A big female roughscale will perhaps attain 3'.

They are burrowers, so deep substrate is a must. I use aspen.

These are my two male kenyans. A normal (orange and black) and an anerythristic morph. There are also albino, snow, paradox albino/snow and flame morph kenyans.

my hubby just informed me that our local petstore has a kenyan sand boa for sale... and then i looked at the local breeder and it seems he does as well!

i've read you can keep a few together... now i frown on that thought... what's your thought?

I don't advocate keeping any snake together with another. Aside from stress issues, you have the problem of possible disease/parasite transmission, and difficulty figuring out which one is sick if that ever happens.

One snake per cage is a good rule.

Re: need help choosing what to get next...
ya that's exactly how i feel as well. thanks for confirming that with me. :)

so far... we are really liking the look of the RTB's still but i'm concerned about the super large enclosure it will need eventually (and it's not like it only lives a short time after all... we'll need the larger encl for many years!)

so i'm searching... again, on the net - relooking at all your suggestions from the first page of this thread and re-examining my options!

As a sand boa owner, I can't say enough how much I love my SB! She's very easy to hold, never tried to bite me, always been a GREAT eater and rather fun to watch her explore her tank at night. Here's a pic of my B&W SB, "Seraph".

I love solomon island boas.. (anything candoia really) they stay small, but if you get one make sure it's a mouse eater, because it's hard to get hatchlings to eat anything but lizards.

I am not sure about temperament.. I think they're pretty mild mannered, but don't quote me on that. Here's a nice website on all candoia boas: http://www.kingsnake.com/candoia/

well, i'd like to introduce you to my new addition... sandy!

    http://www.timelessspirit.com/images...sandyapr06.jpg

i'm still planning on adding something else to our collection... as the hog island boas are sounding like a good idea too... but when i saw this baby at the petstore today... i couldn't resist. she (don't know the sex but have decided she's a girl LOL) had some shed left on her face... so i gave her a little steam bath when she got here... set her up in a 5 gallon tank with carefresh for bedding... and she seems quite content.

do i wait a week to feed her for the first time?

:D:D:D:D thanks to you all for your GREAT suggestions!!!

Re: need help choosing what to get next...
From April's posting of pics a while back, I picked up an anery SB baby at the show last month. Mine has been eating a small mouse pinky every 4 days. The first once or twice was iffy, because Oreo didn't like the FT, but now she strikes and coils once it's in front of her nose.

I know she's hungry when she cruises the aspen on top. Otherwise, we only see her occasionally poking her head out. During the late night, I'll every once in a while look over to the tank and see her stuck on the wall. She's only used her hide once.

And yeah, we call Oreo a worm, because we can grow earthworms that are bigger and fatter than SHE is! :lmao:

The first few times I cleaned bedding, I had to be really careful that I didn't pick HER up too!! Once I couldn't find her, no matter how much I sifted and lifted bedding and thought she had escaped. She was actually scrunched flatter to the glass. *Whew*

Your new baby, Sandy is really pretty!!!! Congrats on your new family member!!!! :D :D

Very pretty little one! Generally the color stays the same.. it may get a bit darker with age, but they hold color well typically.

You should see the itsy bitsy one I'm fostering.. she's quite a worm.. and she's actually grown some since I got her too. :)

I have found nightcrawlers that are bigger than that! Very cute! Is she pretty tame so far? Well, regardless I'm sure a bite from her wouldn't do too much damage.:)

I've never been a huge boa fan with the exception of SBs and Hoggs. I love the looks of anery SBs! After all you SB owners posting those pictures I may have to add one to my list of what to shop for at the show.;)

Feel free to post more pictures!

Re: need help choosing what to get next...
right now just a heating pad, but i'll be picking her up a little uth when the petstore gets more in.

she is so darned cute and is eating like a champ! ate 2 live pinkies at her last meal! - she's a mere 3 months old and was at the petstore for 3 weeks (i know them all there really well so i get the honest scoop on stuff which is wonderful) eating like a champ the whole time.

my only concern was the shed still on her face... but that's off now! that nice sauna soak took care of it. she didn't enjoy it AT ALL but she didn't even attempt to bite/strike during the entire time. and considering a huge human was picking at her face with a towel... she did great!!!

oh i forgot to mention... the cutest thing about her... and the reason i brought her home... is because when she's in my hand... she nudges me, like she wants to nurse... it was so darned cute! you can tell she's a burrower by that behaviour but it just seemed so adorable i couldn't resist her!

I don't know Canadian prices that well but it sounds reasonable. Normally on kingsnake I see babies for $150-200 US dollars of course. Have a look at the parents if you can.. to get a better idea of what the kiddies will look like. There are some ugly hog islands out there. :)

Actually, I am well aware. My fiance is Christian and went to church today with her grandmother. She texted me during church that "he has risen". She obviously has problems :)
