This was the angriest I've ever seen him yesterday. Because he's still so small I had to root around in the substrate to find him and he was not happy about it. Tail rattling, defensive striking, very agitated. He did eat but only after I walked away. In hindsight it was probably too soon after moving into his new abode, but it was well over when his next feeding time was and I wanted to get some food in him.

That's just fear & self-defense- just when he was starting to feel safe & hidden, lol. Shame on you for scaring that tiny snake-

I know it's defensive. In fact I don't think it's possible for a snake to facilitate the emotion of what we would call anger, but it's just easier to say "He was angry" instead of "He was scared and acting defensive."

I know what you meant- that he "looked angry". ;)

First handling session in a while. Between power outages and medical problems so painful they left me borderline bedridden for the past week hasn't left me able to get much of anything done. He's still skittish, tagged me twice and even after calming down a bit kept trying to move away. Try to show him that he doesn't scare me and that I shouldn't scare him. It's a slow work in progress. Didn't expect him to turn out so spirited, but I don't mind.

Sorry to hear you've been out of sorts & all- even a "spirited" young corn snake can't do much damage so I doubt this will continue for very long- mine never have, anyway.

Not much of an update, been so busy with work, but finished an improvement between Hoco and Zebes' setups. A while back I shoved some 2x4s between the cages as the heat from Zeb's panel below was affecting the temps of the enclosure above and making the cool side too warm (the RHPs are on opposite sides between enclosures). Thankfully the gap from the wood planks was enough to alleviate this issue, and added a third plank in the middle after this was taken to prevent bowing.

Today I finally got around to sawing them to size and painting them so it looks much more aesthetically pleasing and so there's not just wood randomly jutting out.

A more proper update this time. Did a little handling session and he's doing much better. Still a bit cranky with getting out of the enclosure but he's not all flighty anymore once I'm holding him, much more relaxed and curious instead of nervous and flighty.

Well, nearly had a double feeding failure today. It was technically feeding day for him and after several minutes searching for him with a thawed fuzzy ready (he's still so small and hard to find in his 4x2), he finally popped out, and was in blue. But thankfully he ate anyway. Don't normally feed during shed but I wasn't aware he was in the cycle and he was willing to eat so might as well. Given his heritage I'm not surprised but after Mira's refusal I'm just anxious at this point...

Now & then one of mine gets fed while in shed too, if I don't realize ahead of offering them dinner & they grab it anyway. Usually it's not a problem, but I really hate it when it messes up their shed, so I try not to feed snakes in blue. I'm glad you didn't have a double-feeding flop- that's discouraging.

I'm aware shed skins aren't remotely accurate to gauge the actual animal's size, but all the same look at the difference between these two sheds that are barely a month apart (bigger one from today). I think he's hit that growth spurt.

A little hard to tell from the pics, but with his latest shed the pinks from the Red Factor gene have started to come in more. Used to be over half his body past the neck was gray, but now there's an overall more pinkish blush. :wuv:

Also he was completely calm when I took him out. No hissing, no tail rattling, no nervous attempts to flee, just pure curiosity. He's come so far. :)

This is what I had to do to find him, even at his current size he hides under the substrate too well for his own good and gives me a mini panic attack every time I need to get him out for something. :taz:

My rant aside, it's fascinating how stark of a contrast Hocotate's behavior is compared to Mira in regards to different colubrids leaning more towards terrestrial or arboreal lifestyles. Even when he was in a tub with paper towels he spent most of the time going underneath them and nowadays I swear he's part sand boa. :P Mira meanwhile I can count on one hand the number of times she's ever been under her paper towels. She uses her hides quite a lot yes, but almost never "buries" herself.

It was a rare feeding night last night where everyone got fed (Zebes only eats around once a month now), but Hoco didn't touch his pinkies even overnight. I knew that was not like him so I searched for him and yep, deep in blue.
    https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...506&height=675
Only after I, of course, once again almost completely dismantled his setup just to find him. He's not that small anymore, idk how he keeps managing to give me the runaround like this, it's practically a comedy routine.

I think I've reached a level of understanding with Hoco's habits. Basically just wait until he reveals himself to actually handle him.

    https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...506&height=675
The camera isn't picking it up well but he's really starting to pink up.
    https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...506&height=675
Also haven't gotten a good pic of his headstamp before. Like an arrowhead with a melting tip.
    https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...506&height=675

Feeding's been a breeze too. I don't even bother trying to find him knowing what that entails, so I just leave his meals on a rock in the enclosure like a dinner table and he quickly smells it out and goes over to eat. :snake:

You're doing great with him- corn snakes are fun to feed & handle, but they do take some time to grow, & to grow into their colors too. Snakes always seem to teach us patience...

Admittedly a more nerdy thing than what most of this server is familiar with, but today the 4th installment of my favorite video game series (which Hocotate got his name from, as that is the name of a planet in it) was announced after a 10 year hiatus and I showed him the news.

Never really paid attention to his belly scutes before, but the checkered patterns corns and other rat snakes have is underrated I have to say. His look like they went through a tectonic shift with how they're slightly misaligned. :P

So, bad news... After lengthy discussion with someone knowledgeable about corn morphs, I found out Hoco is in fact just anery, no red factor/"coral" (which is apparently a catch all term that can mean several genes). The pinks would've been far more vibrant like this if he actually had the gene and the only reason he has pink at all is due to males being more vibrant and potentially having pinks even when anery.
    https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/03...g?v=1610299158
So not only did I not get the morph that I thought I was going to get, but I got grossly overcharged for a gene he doesn't even have. I don't want to just rehome him and try to get the "right one" since it's not his fault and I'd feel awful for getting rid of him for such a superficial reason and I'd feel crushed since I already rehomed a corn snake in the past and still deeply regret that choice to this day, but I'd be lying if I said I still wasn't incredibly disappointed and frustrated... :(

So, after a lot of back and forth and debate, I believe he IS coral anery after all and is just a very weak expression of the red factor gene. Oh well.

I also exercised my greatest feat of willpower in a very long time today. Was at the monthly local today and there was a vendor with a red factor hypo with much richer pinks and was either a European import or from a European bloodline (forget what the guy said exactly). It was also a female and only a month younger than my male so the opportunity was there if I ever wanted to try breeding.

    https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...506&height=675
But ultimately, despite the temptation being incredibly strong, I didn't take her home. Been trying to pay off my car loan and finances are strained right now and I'm just not in a good position especially when I need to work towards enclosure upgrades for the snakes I already have so I needed to go with the wiser choice, as much as it hurt to leave her. :(

As extra incentive to make that choice, I instead got more bamboo stalks for my VBB (she loves using them as "ground floor" hides) and a duplicate VE-200 thermostat. My BP is the last of my 3 snakes that's still on the cheap JumpStart type and I've been meaning to get him a more "professional" upgrade.
    https://media.discordapp.net/attachm...506&height=675

If I go next month though, she happens to still be there and my situation has improved by then, she's mine. ;)

Granted, what I meant was "I'd have two compatible snakes that would be capable of breeding if there was ever a point in time where I wanted and was capable of attempting it" and not "I wanted to get this with the explicit intention of breeding." But you are right either way. :gj:

At this point I'm convinced he is indeed a coral anery (if you could rechange the title Boger, please ;)), it's just a poor expression.

Still can't stop thinking of this coral anery motley female from the same breeder that's always at my monthly local. She's around my male's age too and showcases the red factor gene a lot better. Ah the mental struggle of too many snakes, too little time/space/resources. :snake:
