One thing I am discovering with my coastal, mutt is they don't stop growing as quickly as you think.

She's been a strange feeder, and I always thought she'd be tiny. Today is the first day I questioned her 4 x 2 x 2 cage.

I'm not jumping the gun saying she's out grown it, but Jewel is no longer a small coastal carpet.

Her head has grown, she's thicker and heavier this year and I feel like she's probably going to gain a bit more size this year.

That is a bit strange to me as she'll be 7 years old in June.

My thought on this is simply genetics. You can power feed, under feed, or let the snake do its thing and the animal grow to its potential eventually.

WOW, sorry I'm off topic here.

The Brissy will get pretty big over time is what I'm thinking.

I agree with you, Gio. Short of starving or a gluttonous feeding regimen, snakes will grow to their genetic size potential in time.

I certainly don’t plan to power feed or maintenance feed Charlotte, but will offer food as dictated by her waste eliminating patterns/metabolism and according to her general physical appearance.

Within my power and within reason, she’s going to be kept trim and athletic in build here. Those that have read The Complete Carpet Python know that the upper limits of size potential for coastals, and particularly Brisbane locality, is in the 10-11’ range.

But with one noteworthy exception, the upper range of weight is relatively light for a snake measuring 11’ and the book lists their upper weight range “as much as 14.3lbs”. Sure, that’s not a lightweight snake. But at 11’? That’s a pretty darn lean animal.

Regardless of the length she ends up, I plan to keep her lean and mean!

Hey, I’m going to recheck the book but I thought I saw one coastal described in there weighing in at 49 pounds.

If I saw that correctly that’s insane and absolutely not the norm.

Yep, page 54. 11.3 foot female.

Fresh skin on Charlotte just now. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to capture a decent image of her until she’s in a display enclosure. She’s a busy body to say the least.

Perfect example of a Brisbane coastal carpet. Exactly what you could find if you took a vacation there and caught one in the wild. Tremendously exciting to see!

Waiting to hear about a waitlist on a clutch due to hatch any day, but not holding my breath or making hasty decisions. Also, Mike Pennell has Brisbanes right now from ‘18-‘19. His breeders are siblings to nick’s breeders but look much different. Tempted I must say

All the better, keep the photos coming.

Have you ever had a food refusal?

I would never worry about it, even with your crew being younger. They eventually eat and WOW can they grow.

Jewel hasn't had anything since April 23rd. I'm hoping I can get her to take quail if she gets hungry enough.

    Dude,

The tiger retic was my favorite pattern on a snake, and still is, but this critter of yours is really running a close 2nd.

    I'm digging the updates.

Felt froggy when spot cleaning and handling earlier and decided to give Charlotte a bigger tub. Lots more floor to stretch out and explore and a new set of perches with a deli cup water bowl holder from specialty enclosure designs. Can’t say enough good things about their products.

Charlotte looks GREAT Crook! I like that setup too. Everything she needs. Do they make adult sized perches. I'd love to get a few. You should try a bag of the Reptile Prime bedding. I like it much better than aspen.

Thanks ziggy! They make a plethora of different perch options, though I’m not sure they make one of this exact type in adult sizes? Check out the website, all sorts of cool stuff to get the cage decoration gears turning in your brain haha www.specialtyenclosuredesigns.com

I like the look of coconut based beddings but for my climate aspen is easier for the time being. Humidity stays easily in the 50-70% range with just a water bowl and I’ll mist maybe once during shed if I feel like it. Haven’t had a bad shed since moving to AP cages and Mississippi even on paper substrate or aspen.

Also easier for me to spot waste on lighter substrate with most of my critters being small/young atm. I’m not big on digging around for fecal land mines, though my Suriname boa mandates that by insisting on burying every bowel movement completely under the substrate.

I’ll probably do coco bedding of some sort again in the future. I like to change things up occasionally to give the animals some sensory enrichment. Still have a few blocks of coco husk chips in the closet

    She's looking great!!!

I know a few other people who use SED perches and other products who really like them as well.

Next year (probably, we'll see how they've grown by then) I'm going to build a PVC jungle gym for the Morelia using the SED perches as a rough "template".
I figure they'll love it for some outdoor enrichment and I'll love it for photos.

First update in about a month. Just got a relatively accurate weight at 121grams up from 92 on arrival but there’s always the possibility of some waste being held back. A little shy in her tub but handles very well. Moved to rat fuzzies recently and will work with those until I think she can take an adult mouse or rat pup.

Thanks, guys! I still can’t properly describe her exact colors with my colorblindness but I love her palette. Muted hues of red/green/brown are difficult for me to distinguish. What do y’all see on her?

And yes, I love that lateral stripe down her sides. The sire to that clutch is striped head to tail and looks amazing. I like the really busy, banded pattern Brisbanes too though.

Thank bud! That’s kinda what I’m seeing too but that background color is tricky depending on the light.

Sometimes it seems to have a hint of red, sometimes a hint of green especially below that stripe on her sides.

Enthusiastically smashed a large mouse last night. May give her a rat pup next to keep things different though they’re about the same size. Frequency will be increased through the rest of summer into fall then going cut her off, let her empty out, and cool her down a bit for winter months.

This girl seems to be much more calm and secure when handling as long as she’s got a grip somewhere on a hook or other inanimate object. Fine with me and it’s never bad to have a hook in hand or within reach when handling.

Also starting to put on some size too. Actually almost looks like a two year old carpet now. Can’t wait til she gets that full, broad, flat southern coastal head as she matures

Thanks bud! Charlotte is still much smaller in comparison but growing nicely and somewhere around 150grams. She’s built up a decent bit in the last 5 months. Arrived at 92grams first week of April. Love this species so much. They’d been a dream snake for 15+yrs and so glad I dove in

She's gorgeous!! And I know we're not seeing all the subtle nuances that the camera doesn't pick up. She must be stunning in person.

I weighed Fernie (Bredli) before her meal the other night. She was 200 on the dot, but wasn't fully empty I don't think (tiny poop after last meal). I can only imagine if I was power feeding. She could be taking larger prey easily but I'm still feeding off some of my smaller adult mice and I swear she's still bigger by lunch time than she was during morning checks, hahaha.

Thanks dude! There’s definitely some subtle color shifts depending on the light. Probably partially attributed to my colorblindness but I feel like I see subtle reds, greens, and golds on her sometimes. She’s absolutely incredible in person. I think she’ll be outrageous at 7’+.

Yeah Yafe got longer and then thicker, or so it seems. He's about 650G now (and if I had to guess, 4.5-5FT) and really seems to be bulking up on the small rats. He will be on mediums before I know it. At 500G I saw a small lump the day after eating the small rats, now I barely notice it the next morning.
