No, it most definitely had a stub tail. Aside from that, quite beautiful and healthy looking.

Re: Noxubee Wildlife Refuge
First road cruised herp of the year at Noxubee. Nerodia sp. of some sort. Could be diamondback water snake or plain bellied water snake. Either dirty or in shed or both and hard to identify without clearly visible pattern.

Well, not the wildlife refuge, but the side of the house next to my apartment when I got home from campus today... still a Mississippi native herp though so it counts in my book.
Plestiodon inexpectatus

When I lived in Tennessee, I used to find the tails in my garage all the time. I'm fairly certain that the rest of the lizard got away most times.

I'm afraid to ask who or what was chasing them...?

Most definitely not, it was in the middle of the road and moving quickly...

Coincidence, I know...that's why I winked.
And good job "catching" him-

Re: Noxubee Wildlife Refuge
Haven’t gotten out to the refuge quite as often as I’d hoped this summer and been a bit slow when I have made it out there. Here’s a couple finds from the last two trips out road cruising.

I believe diamondback water snake…? (Not 100% on the exact species identification) Nerodia of some sort nonetheless.

Storeria dekayi Dekay’s Brown Snake. One of the largest I’ve found at close to 12” long or so.

Re: Noxubee Wildlife Refuge
That DeKay's could not have made himself any flatter in his posturing, could he? What a menacing animal and yet, you still drew from deep within you the courage to pick him up. The farce is strong with this one. :P

 I found a little Dekay's in my back yard last fall while raking up leaves- I picked him up briefly to move him away to safety, despite his frightful coiled defiance. :snake2:
Came across what I assume was the same one several months ago, studying me & happily with less terror on his or her part- as before, I only handled enough to move to safety (I was mowing grass), & neither time did the snake actually try to bite me- just hoped to scare me off. I sure love finding snakes in my yard- the largest this year so far was a 2' ribbon snake that was watching me intently as I pulled weeds very close to her, but she appeared ready to take me on if I dared to "try anything"! That "extra foot" made all the difference, I kept my hands to myself.
