I just picked up a beautiful orange bloch reticulated gargoyle gecko and named her Neela... They too are very awesome little creatures. Thank you for sharing Katie and please keep us updated on her progress :D
Pictures of Neela please! No pictures and it didn't happen.
Do you have a thread? Please send link? If not, start one! We want pictures!
Yeah, I started a thread about Katie joining BP.net and also Katie started her own about that, and a few others, like this one.
She's not only learning how to be a great Leachie momma, in addition to loving my reptiles, especially Solana (who she handles and even feeds regularly), but she's really becoming part of the community on here as well. I couldn't be happier about that or more proud of her in how she's taken to Ezzy and how seriously she is taking her care.

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Esmeralda continues to do very well. Tonight, Dakski showed me how to properly clean and sanitize her home. I am having trouble with humidity in the room she is in and have noted mold in the enclosure. So that's not good. Dakski and I decided to swap out the wood chips, which are A) expensive and B) super messy - ergo I cannot stand them with the printless newspaper he uses in all the other enclosures. It doesn't seem that Ezzy spends ANY time near the woodchips... So yeah. That should be okay I hope. I will be monitoring the situation closely and making sure to spray as needed.
I take the logs out once a week to clean them and swap out... I have 2 sets. I put them back in there in different positions to give her some stimulation. Tonight, though, they are arranged as so and I came into the room to find this super cuteness!!!

Sorry to hear about the mold! Gahhh glad you caught it early !!
what are their desired humidity levels ?
just a suggestion and not sure how it works for them but with my crested gecko ET I just spray the back corner when I mist or a side of the glass and him a bit and gently that way the water is just to the side and not the cork or substrate. Might be worth a try. I’ve noticed that cork can really hold moisture.
Good idea swapping for paper to combat the issue.

At first, we thought we had a bad humidity gauge, it kept reading 90%+. They can be unreliable, so I bought the same one I use for Behira and Shayna, and it read close to the same.
The tank is so well insulated and the room is really humid now (AC window unit came out and temps are in the 75F range, but humidity has gone up). However, I believe this will only last a few days as it's getting colder and less humid here in CT. Additionally, the heat will kick on soon and start to dry things out.
SunshwineWalker has been great about spraying the sides only, and checking first to see how "damp" the tank is. She hadn't sprayed in 3-4 days once she/we noticed how damp it was in there. Range for Ezzy is 65-80%, but ideal is probably about 70-75% with a bump when shedding.

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
I absolutely LOVE the "sensor push" for Smeagols tank.
It's a tiny little square sensor that you can hang or lay down in your enclosure.
It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and gives you the current temp and humidity and whether they are rising or falling.
Better yet, it will give you statistics for the past hour, past day, week, month and year. Will tell you the highest and lowest and average that the Temps and humidity has been during these time frames.
I find that very helpful since you are supposed to bring humidity up daily..but also let it drop in between. And make sure Temps do not go to high...
I'm going to post some screen shots off of the app next [emoji4]
PS you can also buy the wifi router so that you can check Temps and humidity while away. I don't need that, though..I just wanted something with a smaller footprint in the cage as as well as very spot on. Mine is hanging under his coconut hide.

Okay, that sensor thing is amazing. I may have to invest once I get my PVC cages in.

Yeah, I figured
Only the best for our babies, right ??? :)
I do think that these are awesome when it comes to keeping a species such as Rhac. Geckos. Esp. since they need a range of high to more moderate humidity in a 24 hour period. And temps going to high (or low) can quickly cause issues, esp. to high.
It really helps to go back and have a peek at the ranges through the day/week/ etc
Well, congrats Ezzy, you already have your parents well trained !!! Only the best, girl...only the best :D
-
I have also figured out that the wood deco tends to mold more quickly. I now spray the (fake) plants as well as the spaghnum moss I keep in his coconut and on his floor. That moss is the bomb. It holds humidity like awesome, but never molds. And it dries out nicely in between.
You could add some in a area of the cage, perhaps in a shallow container, and also mist it. It will keep some humidity in the cage and on top of that, if she feels the need (before or during shedding, or when wanting to hide) she can burrow in it :)
Smeagol LOVES to get under that moss...
If you have mold on the wood you can use some of the F10 on a paper towel and rub it off, it usually doesn't come back, unless its to wet again.

Esmeralda (Ezzy) is doing great. Katie's doing a great job with her and keeping her tank clean and they are continuing to bond.
Katie did the full monthly cage cleaning the other day, with full F10SC treatment, etc.
I had a chance to hold the cutie (in this case, I am referring to Ezzy :)).

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Apparently, Katie and I are not updating Ezzy's thread enough (Zina10).
Katie's been under the weather and I've been dealing with Yafe and trying to keep everything calm in the kingdom.
However, Ezzy needed a tank cleaning today, and Katie is working despite not feeling well, so I grabbed some photos with Ezzy.
I also weighed her and she's 210G, up from 200G about a month ago. Sometimes she annihilates the food, other times she picks at it. Good to know she's certainly not losing and seems happy and healthy.
Here's a quick video link to Ezzy going back in her enclosure. No leap into it this time, but she's still so adorable. Video Link: https://streamable.com/yi5ie

Hope you feel better soon, Katie...I guess it's that time of year when "everyone is sharing"...

So pretty !!!!
Gotta follow the rules, ya know, LOL
Hope Katie will feel better soon, and Yafe, too. Better days to come :)
Ezzy is the bomb :)

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Feeding night for Ezzy. Katie had her out for a bit and then I got to hold her for a while so Katie could make her food.
She's pretty chill most of the time now.
However, she's quite the Leaping Leachie! See the video link below for her jump/plop back onto her branches in her tank.

Here's Ezzy chilling with Dad! It was a little darker in the room tonight as we kept the big lamp off. You can see her pupils just start to open up.

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Ezzy was out tonight so Katie could do a full cage cleaning with a long F10SC soak and all.
We got a cute video of her with a perfect ending; a huge leap off my hand and onto her fresh log on the chair next to her tank. Had to be a 2 1/2 foot jump in all! Crazy girl!

It's not the first time, and it won't be the last time, she takes a flying leap! We've got her number now. It's pretty easy to tell when she wants to LEAP!
Thank you! We both love her. Katie thinks she's the prettiest gecko around. I can't argue that, but I think her personality rocks and I love the way she literally argues with us (using those vocal cords) when we ask her to do something she doesn't want to do.

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Ezzy has moved to the Reptile Area, along with Ferry, and all other cold blooded creatures in the house.
https://ball-pythons.net/forums/show...Complete/page3
She (and Ferry) have matching 2' (Wide) X 1.5' (Deep) X 2' (High) Boaphile tanks coming (that will open to the side so we can put their water and food bowls on the doors. They will be stacked on top of each other.
The tanks will have RHP's to keep temps about 77F in the summer and ensure they stay about 70-71F in the winter. They will likely barely run, but better safe than sorry.
Ezzy seems to be taking to the new room nicely. She happily ate her food powder/gel last night and has been peaking out a bit.

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Ezzy (and Ferry) had their tanks cleaned yesterday and fresh logs/wood put in.
I tried to take a video of me picking Ezzy up, as she's usually cage defensive, but she was a total doll. It's honestly 50/50 with her. I always wear gloves because you just don't know and when she's, "Protecting This House," she will happily try to remove a finger! However, once out of the cage, she is a total sweetheart. Very, very, common for Leachies to be cage defensive. 70/30 (for) being calm when out. We got lucky with her because she is a total puppy dog when out of her enclosure.
She weighed in at 205G, which is what she's been for a few months now.

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Ezzy is such a diva. Very cage defensive, and also very vocal (if you don't know, geckos have vocal cords - leachies, like Ezzy - tend to use them a lot).
I reach in to take her out to clean her tank (with gloves of course) and she tries to take my fingers off. She has yet to clamp down, but will lunge at my hand and hiss and try to bite it. It's more like lunge/snake like strike then a reach out and grab.
To deal with this, I either just grab her, cover her head with one gloved hand or just a glove, and then she calms right down and I can pick her up. Once she's out of her "home" she's a total sweetie.
"I must protect this house!" Leachies, even sweet ones when out, tend to be cage territorial. Ferry, a chewie, exhibits none of this and is a social butterfly even in his tank.
Anyway, I get her to stop biting and start picking her up and she starts chirping (a geckos scream) and clicking at me. "HELP!" That lasted 2 seconds and then she was like, "oh, hey dad." and calmed right down.
WHAT A DIVA!
Anyway, here's a video of her being calm and sweet and going back into her nice, freshly cleaned, tank.

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Wow, I cannot believe how long it's been since I updated on Ezzy.
She's doing really well. She loves her digs and is eating like a pig. She still wants to kill me when I go into her tank which is normal Leachie behavior. I MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE! So, I wear the welders gloves and it's not an issue. I usually cover her head with one glove and pick her up with the other hand. Once out, she's a happy girl and likes to leap and climb on me and Katie.
Do not let Leachie in tank behavior scare you off them. They are really awesome pets and do fine when out (in many cases, not all), but they are cage territorial (most). I think it's like hook training my boas, the welders gloves. In tank - boas want food, until they know none is coming, I do not put hands in. Ezzy needs some extra care coming out, but once out, is fine.
She had lost a little weight after laying eggs as I tried a new food for her that I got from her breeder. Ferry (Chewie) loves the breeder food, but Ezzy wasn't having it. She wanted her Pangea with bugs. So I switched back, and in no time, she was back to her normal weight.
Tonight, I caught her shedding!!!!!!! Pics below.
https://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...om/wjTyffR.jpghttps://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...om/e7cs2Yr.jpghttps://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...om/PxOng5v.jpg

 What an awesome lizard, so much personality! (probably takes after her folks...not talking about fingers either, LOL)
So how many eggs did she lay in all? -did any look good? -did you try incubating them, in case? Snakes can do parthenogenesis*, so I assume lizards can too?
*And speaking of which, when I get a chance, I have some news for y'all on that & will do a thread soon...hint, I now have another snake! :O

She laid two eggs. The eggs were dimpled and caved in at parts and appeared to be no good. I did not incubate them. Leachies only lay 2 eggs normally, I believe. One of the reasons they are so expensive. The females are picky about mates and will not breed with just anyone and they lay only a couple of eggs at at time (give or take - maybe 3????)?
No idea on the eggs being potentially viable or not. The breeder said she might lay eggs but that they would be infertile unless she bred.
She's a cool lizard. Very vocal. Ferry occasionally makes noises, and my leopard geckos have in the past (when I had to restrain to give meds or check their mouths, etc.), but Ezzy talks all the time. She clicks and chirps a lot when we handle her and especially when I try to get her out. She puts up quite the front and has a fit, but then when out, she makes more happy sounds, just talking.
Katie loves that she doesn't eat any live food. I think she's an all around cool lizard. Having said that, Ferry (Chewie) is a real charmer. He's outgoing and loves to come out and play and doesn't try to eat me! If I had to recommend one Rhacodactylus to someone, and they were willing to feed live insects as well as the powder food/gel, I would have to say Chewie. Having said that, I love them both and am glad I have both.
Aside from the misting system for both to keep the humidity above 70-80%% and closer to 80-90% (especially for Ferry), they don't need much. I have RHP's installed as a backup but they rarely run (70-74F is perfect for them) and their tanks are the smallest I have.
*And speaking of which, when I get a chance, I have some news for y'all on that & will do a thread soon...hint, I now have another snake! :O
What is it???????????? Oh, I cannot wait.

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Ezzy is doing great. She continues to try to kill me when I go in the tank, but I use the welders gloves and if need be just remove the wood or perch she's on. Once picked up or removed from the tank, she calms right down.
However, if you are planning on getting a Leachie, remember, their motto is, "I MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE!"
"Dad, leave me alone, I am shy and I WANT TO EAT MY DINNER"
https://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...om/Ktdk79K.jpg
-
Too bad you can't train them to protect YOUR house...I can just "see it"! :D
And they'd get fed easily, 'cause how many intruders would even know what a Leachie is, even if you had a sign warning "Premises protected by an attack Leachie!"

Re: Esmeralda - Bayonnaise Leachie
Haven't posted about Ezzy in a long time. She's doing great and still wants to kill me when I go in her tank, but is fine once out. She loves to chirp and talk, usually discontent, but she's worth the trouble :). Everyone loves her unique look and she's easy peasy to feed to boot. She's been hanging around 200G +/- 5G for a while now.
I am giving her leapin' leachies food, which Ferry loves, but she won't touch it unless I put pangea in. I prefer the stuff formulated for her, but she's stubborn. At least she's getting 50-60% of the good stuff mixed in.
For others with Rhacodactylus, it's worth looking at the food Steve makes. I bought both Ferry and Ezzy from him and he really knows his stuff.

I'd be worried about Ezzy if she didn't try to, "Defend This House," every time I went to pick her up. It means she feels happy and safe in her enclosure and wants to protect it. The day she climbs on my hand like Ferry is the day I get concerned.

Yeah, Ferry too, perfect camouflage. Could you imagine with foliage too?
Interestingly enough, at least here in the states, it's not super easy, or cheap, to find them either. The females only produce a few eggs a couple times a year, if that, and can be very picky about a mate. I've heard of breeders trying 10 males before the female accepts the courting.
