Going to put both live and artificial plants in there. I did some research and in some places they live in caves and that gave me the idea for the hide portion of the enclosure. The bottom is going to be more tropical and transitioning to tropical outside the hide. She has a huge tub that fits in the bottom for a water swimming area. Well she wont be able to swim but she can get in it. The humidity down there will be much higher than on the top.

I do plan on having loose wood chips in the enclosure but I am a long way from doing that yet. I even thought about sand being a part of the texture of the rocks but decided not to. Crawling across sandpaper would not be comfy either. Going to try to shape the rocks up some and make it easier to clean a little but also look a little better. Also changing paint scheme. Going with more greys and light browns. I will get it right. Just takes some learning on my part.

most peeps just use foam to help shape the walls and background or use foam to stabilize something like a branch. then we just plop down substrate on the flat floor so it's easier to clean. woodchip, sand or whatever will be more comfortable when it's loose and can shift around and when it's not stuck to foam or anything. i look forward to your progress.

have u thought about drainage for the live plants? will u plant them in the substrate or keep them potted? are u willing to house bioactive bugs? i hope that u are considering these things.

Yes to semi bio active bugs and all the live plants will be on bottom level which is the aquatic level. Yes drainage for the plants is being planed for.

Thanks. She was moving around slowly at first. Then she was like, "I am free!" Then she was like, "What is this or that?" I had a time taking her back out to put her back in the smaller enclosure. She was just excited to explore a new location. She moved carefully at first then she moved everywhere she could checking out everything within reach. She was not to sure about the hole to get to the bottom side as of yet. She looked down and was like, "A hole?" and was like, "I wonder?" and poked her head down a min but pulled back up without going down there. Was fun to see her for sure. Cant wait to get this build finished for her to move around in as much as she likes. I think her favorite spot was the cave I made. She spent most of her time on that side of the enclosure. I might just finish painting it for now and then get those heat panels and finish the LED light bar I am building and let her get in the top asap. Then later open the bottom once done. Just worried about fumes from the bottom while drying effecting her. I can wait till it is all done. Just so tempting. :D:O:rolleyes::P:D:confusd:;):D:oops::P:)

After seeing her in it, I wonder if I am going to large with the enclosure. I know she will grow lots more and eventually use all of it but that is years down the road. For a while I could use the top for one and the bottom for the other but I like the aquatic section for Rainbow on bottom. I will use Rainbow's current cage for Aurora when I first get her. She will be much smaller in the beginning. So many exciting things happening and so much waiting. It will be worth it when I am done. I think my collection is complete with Aurora for a long time. Now going to work over the next year on making the enclosures I have more natural looking and quality. So much new. So much fun!

Thanks so much. The wait is hard for sure. At this point I am thinking January will be paid off. Doing 300 a month is a heck of a sacrifice but she will be worth it. Was going to try to do 500 but is to much. They are happy with 3 so that is what I am doing for now. I have been kind of quiet about the build this past weekend. Been working on it a lot an there will be more photos coming soon. The LED light bar I am building is almost ready to go in. Taking the florescent bulbs out. Should add a nice look. I can also change the color of the lighting as well. Painting like a mad man as well and working on irrigation and placement of pots for the few live plants that will be going into the bottom half. So much cool stuff going into this build. Must stay in budget.... must stay in budget... must stay in budget... LOL. Did another education show Saturday. Advertised on FB (hate FB by the way) this time and people showed up. I was there from 12 to 8 as a result. Will post another thread with photos for that though. So much coolness and fun!!!!!

Tried some more things out tonight. Shaped some of the foam before painting. Long way to go but here is what it looks like now. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...745ec5fdb4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c3b2996c82.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c7c3f47b51.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a479b1abee.jpg

I like the look so far.

The variations in lighting are a nice touch and they make her colors pop.

Are you going right over the foam with epoxy? What brand are you using? Do they find good and sturdy? I need to get my females cage finished up and was just thinking today I'd love to dress it up a little. I've done a few backgrounds in the past with foam then mortar paint and sealer but don't want to add that much weight so I'm very intrigued by your method for this.

I will have e to get the brand for you tomorrow. I picked it up from home depot. Have disposed of it already. Couple of weeks painting. Drying. Painting again. Then 3 layers of clear epoxy over entire cage. Heat panels installed on top layer. LED bar made by me and placed yesterday. Blocked off bottom layer and now is play time and food for Rainbow in new home. She is spending the night in there so food mode is not an issue. Now time to train on food side VS hand side again. Her new home even came stocked with a jumbo rat and 2 quail. Yummmmmmmmm......

Please let me know what you think. One concern is, she was in feeding mode. She attacked a piece of the foam. Was worried she would break it off and eat it. Thank full she didn't break it off. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...41149f658e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bb3e504dc2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bf1b604d64.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...12a9c9523c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b6d359a96e.jpg

She loves her cave. I knew that raising the sides of the cave with a place she could sit in and feel snuggled was going to make her happy. She only takes up half of it right now. Just the cave part is 3 ft X 3 Dr X 1.5 ft. I reached in and pet her a moment and she is still digesting. This weekend going to take her back out for a couple of days to do some more modifications. Open to suggestions and questions. Please let me know your thoughts. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f3a785e4f2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7c36503520.jpg

I put a 20 gallon swimming tub in the bottom. Thinking about putting a UTH under the tub to heat the water some. The water is always 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the air around it. Would be heated by the sun in nature. Thoughts?

I've often thought about this. I can see no possible downside of warming their water up some. Not sure how well a heat pad would do, my idea was using an adjustable aquarium heater. I say give it whirl and see how she responds to it.

I like the cave too! :gj:

But about heating the water, remember that warmer water will be much friendlier to bacteria & all that...if you plan to change the water frequently, your snake would
probably love a heated swimming pool, but it might be detrimental to health if you get too busy to stay on top of that, & with 20 gallons, that might get "old"?

Does the the twenty gallon have a spigot so it can drain to the outside? Alternatively, are you using the "python" hose that aquarists use to drain tanks from the top? Is the tub removable for sanitizing, or do you need to get in there yourself to sanitize it? Just curious. I've read most of this thread, but am not visualizing how the maintenance will be done.

There is a video series I found last night (and ended up binge watching till the wee hours), which has one episode on anacondas and the water area. He doesn't go into it in detail, but basically suggests a mechanical filtration system with a sump. (S'N'A, or something like that, short for Snakes and Adders, which is the name of his shop in the UK.)

Do you have a drainage layer and spigot for the planted area? If the snake is in and out of the water, things could get soggy. Love planted tanks, and big enriched enclosures - never done one for anything bigger than a corn snake, and never put an an aquatic area.

    Please keep us updated!
