He spends most of his time up in the greenery, but I have also seen him check out his mossy coconut lately ! He used to never get on the ground, but since I put the leaf litter on there, he investigates and jumps around in them. I don't think he liked to walk on the coco coir and he also wasn't a fan of the paper towels but the leaves seem to be fun
I guess they like what they like, huh ? Better never get rid of that flower, haha, its his "blankey" ;)
Wavvy keeps finding his way back to his flower stalk on the floor. i positioned it so it leads from the floor up to the top of his tree so i hope he learns he can climb up it. this am i saw him in the back stuck to the background insert behind all his leaves. he didn't eat last night, but i'm wondering if me handling him and adding a bunch of new stuff to his enclosure made him weary to explore.

It might have. But then again, Smeagol doesn't eat every day either, and from what I've heard, many Cresties don't.
While I think its important to leave stress to a lower level, I also think that leaving them completely be and then doing a bunch of stuff a couple weeks later is also not the best. In my own experience, as short as it is, it helped that Smeagol got used to seeing me every day. Doing spot cleaning every day, talking to him, looking at him. Its become a routine for him. I find that what seemed to stress him the most was doing the complete do - overs in the cage, when I had to remove him and put him into another container while cleaning. Actually, that is the reason why I finally just put him into the larger enclosure. Now I can spot clean around him without having to take everything out (incl. him)
I really liked having paper towel, it helps keep things clean and you can see if they eat and poop. But in order to clean I had to remove the entire paper and redo it. I couldn't do that without taking most stuff out. The coco coir made this much easier, I could spot clean without removing stuff. But..he didn't seem to like walking on it. While I don't feed bugs in the enclosure and he never tried to "taste" the stuff, it is small enough to be eaten should they decide to do so. (I think they mostly get it in their mouth when they think they see a bug). In the wild they don't walk on fluffy soft coir either, so maybe thats why he didn't like it?
So far the leaves work great. They are to big/stiff to eat. He loves walking on them. And they make spot cleaning easy, I just remove the leaf that the mess is on and add more as needed.
Long story short, they really do seem to like their routine and their stuff. Smeagol picked his sleeping area on day one and has never budged. That's where he likes to be. So for now I try not to change to much stuff.
I will eventually change the substrate, though. I will remove the coco coir under the leaves and put in bioactive soil. I like the way it looks and smells, esp. the leaves. I'm not ready to go full on bio active, because this enclosure is to small and I don't want the bright lights on him, so the plants stay plastic/silk for now. Plus he loves his home and I don't want to change that part.
Wavvy is still SO new. He will be alright. He actually seemed to settle in quite well already. Like I said, they don't always eat every day, and he still has his flower. He will find / choose his "spot" and stick with it. Just leave the familiar in with him, he will be just fine. He is looking great and at a great weight. Try not to stress him overly, but also don't completely baby him by leaving him 99% be. Because he will get used to that and possibly stress more once there is more activity. Let him see you and observe you often, keep doing your spot cleaning and maintenance and change food every other day. Just do now what you plan on doing in the future. He will get used to it.
Smeagol hardly moved the first 3 weeks. Now he is such a clown and I have live entertainment every night. Smeagol has lost all his fear and he loves coming to the door and jumping on my hands.
Just set your enclosure up the way you like it and the way it works for you. Wavvy will be ok. Just look at all the changes he has went through recently and he is still such a chill guy and so sweet and he already ate for you. He is a lot tougher then he looks, LOL.
And he certainly is drop dead gorgeous. You really won the Crestie lottery with him :)

i've read it's best to handle them frequently and regularly, and that the "grace period" before handling new reptiles doesn't really apply to these guys.
he's in my bathroom so he sees and hears me every day, and i make a point when i get home after work to check on him and talk to him and just observe him. i'm going to start handling every other day or so.

i'm going to keep him on paper towel until i get a better idea of when he poops and pees, so i know how often to check and clean. until i'm more comfortable with my knowledge of care for these guys, i'll keep the substrate as simple as i can. i'd love to go bioactive eventually.
that's a good point about not changing things in the enclosure for a bit, so they can pick where they want to be and get comfy.

He will absolutely learn to trust you. You can already tell he is not one of the spazzy ones!
And yes..until ready to shed, he will stick with it..LOL. When Smeagol got ready to shed he kept sliding down everything..LOL
Nothing wrong with paper towels, you can stick with that forever if you want. In my case it was easier with the substrate. But it all depends how you are set up and what works for you, while safe for the little one.
Êw...poor baby with the moldy food, well, I know that won't happen again while in your care.
You are awesome and he is awesome. You are both lucky to have found each other [emoji4]

[emoji16][emoji14]
from my readings, yes they're okay but do need some adjustment to help trap humidity. so far i have not made adjustments to my 12x12x18 mesh top and it's doing well, tho it does get close to dropping below 50% if i don't pay attention. i'll be adding tin foil over one half in the next day or two.
crestie enclosures should be misted once or twice a day to jump that humidity to around 70-80%, then you allow it to fall throughout the day/night (not dropping below 50%).

Cresties are infamous for sleeping in all kinds of weird positions. The pangaea forum has a sticky thread dedicated strictly to photos of cresties sleeping in funny positions. Very cute!
Btw someone on my hermit crab forum recently got a crestie and was posting about it. She used frog moss as a substrate which I thought was BRILLIANT. Helps with humidity, looks great and I don't think there's any way ur crestie could accidentally swallow that stuff. I'm pretty set in my paper towel ways but thought u might be interested for your terrarium.

Also ps I double checked the thread and I gave u the wrong moss, it was actually zoomed sphagnum. I imagine frog moss might work too but spaghnum would be alot easier

Yah u know it's funny, Boogie used to turn a realy goldenrod yellow but these days I really never see him fired up like that. The most he gets nowadays is a slight yellow cast. I wonder if it's because of his age

Re: welcome home, Wavvy
Haha I think u picked it. The main reason I decided to get a crested gecko all those years ago instead of any other kind of reptile was because the care requirements are so .ridiculously. simple. They don't need supplemental lighting, live at a warm room temp, have a MRP so you feed the same thing all the time, just add water. There's nothing to it. Honestly after all these years I dont even have a therm or hydrometer in there anymore because you know if it's too dry of you see stuck shed and I haven't seen any stuck shed in YEARS and once again, warm room temp. Unless you're going to breed them there's really nothing more to it.
The only other thing I MIGHT recommend is to keep some entamoeba meds handy. it's the only disease that cresties are susceptible to and if they get it they can die within a few days. I actually had a second crestie many years ago. He was GORGEOUS, his name was Aldo. I wish I had a picture of him. I only had him for a couple of months. One day I looked in his tank and he was so skinny all of a sudden! I immediately ordered the entamoeba meds overnight from pangaea but he was dead the next morning before the meds got to me. If I'd been able to treat him right away he might have made it.
Thanks for the nod but there's just not that much to created gecko care. That's one of the things that makes them so awesome! East peasy! But certainly let me know if u have any questions.
Ps I dont know that YouTube channel

thank you so much for the informative reply. i haven't seen you much on the forum (apologies if i've happened to miss you) but i appreciate your posts on my thread very much! it's so funny: my first reptile was my male ball python Yellow, who will be 4 this sept. ball pythons have pretty critical husbandry requirements compared to most "starting" reptiles, so with 6 ball pythons and 1 crested gecko, i feel like i'm neglecting my crestie somehow without thermostats and heating!
one thing i've learned about cresties from her channel is that bugs are pretty important to their diet. however, the roaches we feed (as in "domestic" roach feeders) aren't as "healthy" as their wild counter parts, i.e. the natural diet they consume. do you have an opinion on this? should i be feeding bugs on a regular basis?
again, thank you so much for your informative replies; i'm so new, and you have (minimum) 13 years experience! i value your input. [emoji4]

Re: welcome home, Wavvy
Interesting question. When I first got boogie and was spending alot of time on crested gecko forums the advice was not to feed bugs as more than an occasional treat because the CGD was a formulated, complete diet. The thinking was that if you were feeding anything additional regularly than you were unbalancing the diet. I do not feed bugs almost at all and obviously boogie is quite old so it seems to be working fine.
When she says that the bigs aren't as 'healthy' as the bugs we feed she is basically making the core argument against feeding bugs. The reason all the best breeder advice was to only feed cgd was because we cannot mimic the variety they would get in the wild ourselves but cgd is carefully formulated to meet their actual dietary requirements. Also most of our feeder bugs tend to be higher in fat and lower in various trace minerals than wild bugs would be.
That being said I was just looking at the pangea crestie forum, which used to be THE forum for crestie care and breeding and alot of people were talking about feeding bugs in a more serious way. I dont really trust those folks because I do not know them that well and honestly it seems like the forum has gone downhill, it only has a general CG chat where there used to be a different forum for every subject.
Based on everything I know you shouldn't feed bugs on the regs but it seems like folks are having success with that method. My style of best practices is kind of a 'whatever works' thing. Hope that helps.
Ps I dont have any ball pythons! I have always wanted one but dont think I'll be getting on anytime soon since I decided to get a parrotlet instead.
-
Opinions always change. New info comes out. More research gets done. Esp. with the New Caledonian geckos.
I don't think we can mimic their exact diet no matter what. What we can do, is try to add all needed ingredients, minerals, vitamins, percentages. But that alone sometimes isn't enough. Just like with other animals you can try to have the perfect diet on paper, yet some of them do not do well on it. Certain things do not get used by the body as intended. Certain things do not get digested as intended.
Personally, I think its great that there is a wider variety of QUALITY diets coming out and the research is ongoing.
You will find people that raised these animals on lots of insects and their own home made variety of foods for many years and they are fine. You will find animals feeding on nothing but Repashy and/or Pangea for many years and they seem fine. Then there are the ones that try to do a variety of everything and their animals have been fine for many years, as well.
Following the latest research, its been said that these geckos actually eat mostly bugs and some fruit that falls on the ground during the season that fruit ripens. Doesn't mean that "our" bugs are the same, though. It does seem that the younger animals of that species eat more insects and the older ones tend to eat less of them.
You can make the insects more nutritious, though. A lot of people buy crickets or insects at a store where those insects have been fed either nothing or nothing nutritious. Some people raise their own, but feed them mostly cat/dog food.
If you feed your feeders well, they will be more nutritious for sure. The Dubias I have eat very well, LOL. They get all kinds of veggies, fruits and greens. On top of that a good roach chow that contains important ingredients. They also eat some of the complete Gecko diet. Before feeding them off, they get dusted well with a high quality calcium/D3 supplement.
I try to feed quality complete Crested Gecko diets (variety, not that he cares for all of them, LOL) but also insects, the ones that are healthier to begin with and have been raised and gut loaded on quality food.
Have you tried the Black Panther diets yet? They smell good and have great ingredients. But the consistency..ugh. Like snot. LOL

last night i went to take Wavvy out and check husbandry, fix him up some food, and mist before i went to bed. i think he was pretty much dead asleep as he didn't move much upon picking him up and he was very fired down. once he was in my hand he started moving a lot, and i figured he just really didn't like that he was woken up. i realized my spray bottle was in the other room (~15ft away) so we took a short walk to go get it. well, Wavvy decided to bail and JUMPED OUT OF MY HAND INTO THE ABYSS THAT IS THE HALLWAY! i think he was trying to make it to the wall, but fell over 4ft down to the carpet! i was mortified! it all happened in slow-mo! i thought this is it; he's losing his tail; it's gone. but no, he just sat still on the carpet probably contemplating how to get farther away from me. i scooped him up and we went about our business. he was pretty jumpy tonight, more than i've ever seen.
i think he just really wanted to go back to sleep. :colbert:

yesterday i took him out to mist and prepare food, and he ate right out of the dish from my hand when i held it up to him! it was so fun to watch him chow down. he eats a lot!!!

Re: welcome home, Wavvy
did a total enclosure cleaning and rearranged his decor a few days ago. it's way more enclosed and he seems to have taken to the changes well.
here he is with his butt resting on the top of the backdrop and his upper body laying on top of his coconut hide.
