Thank you. I love him also. He has a personality that is awesome. More questions for you... Can we help him shed?? With my iguanas I would gently peel the dead skin back similar to peeling your skin when you get a sunburn. Is that ok around his head and tail??

I have done it with no problem. But first give him time to shed by himself, remember, humidity at 60-70%
If you need to soak him, do so for 1 or 2 hours, let him move and rub against a towel, and if the skin is stuck at the tail (and if its hydrated) you can peel it until you get it all, but as far as ive seen he is doing a good job.

I will send more pics tomorrow to update you on it. I'm misting his tank to increase the humidity. It's at less than 50% right now. We have also been soaking him due to me thinking he was dehydrated. Was that a mistake??

Hahaha its ok, nothing bad will happen, you dont have to do it anymore tho. As long as he has water he'll be ok. You can buy sphagnum moss, place it around the enclosure and make it moist. You can also put a damp towel on the top of the enclosure (i think you have screen top right? If so, the humidity escapes through there) dont cover the whole thing tho, let space for air to go in, an open the top at least once a day to get "new" air in. Any of those two methods will increase humidity, but for now i would say use the towel and see if it boosts the humidity.

Soaking while the snake is in shed can sometimes cause a "bad shed". This just means the skin comes off in pieces instead of one big piece. Not a big deal but in the future, you only need to soak the snake if it has stuck shed.

A healthy shed should be in one piece. The snake will roll it off like a sock. Not like lizards where it comes off in pieces. :)

Beautiful BP you have there! Get him some snug hides. He will thank you for it.

Someone else had suggested to put foil over half the top to keep the humidity in as well. I have done that, but the tank now looks ghetto. Lol. I'm thinking I will have to buy a glass top for it this weekend.

Agreed. Soaking is only needed if there is some stuck shed. It would be awesome if you get a perfect shed (one piece) but if he sheds the whole thing by himself, even if its in pieces, its still ok (although your goal should be a perfect shed next time)

Plexiglass looks really good. I dont use it, nor have i used it before so i dont have knowledge regarding how to set it up or where to get it. But i see your point, i dont like the tin foil method, i rather use the towel, i have noticed it works for the humidity

Working on the snug hides now. How often will he shed?? I'm new with snakes. I don't want to panic again like I did this time. Can you tell me how to check if it's a male or female?? I've looked on line and YouTube, but I think he's too small or I don't know what to look for. Probably both to be honest.[emoji23][emoji23]

Now that I know a little more of what to look for I can be better prepared for his next shed. I will also put a few more roughly textured items in his tank so me can rub up against them. I already have a few more silk plants to clean and put in there.

Perfect. I will love to see them when you have them. He should shed every 4-6 weeks give or take. Dont try to do it, you will hurt the little guy. You are looking for the hemipenes (male) or the lack of them(female) and yes, he can be sexed at that size. If you find a real reptile store (not petco or anything like that) they most likely have experience doing it

I haven't touched him. I'm too afraid of hurting him. I'm thinking of getting him into the vet after he is done shedding just to make sure he's ok. The paranoid mom in me. [emoji23][emoji23]

Hahaha well, a trip to the vet has never hurt a snake lol but from what ive seen, he looks nice and round and pretty healthy. Lets see how the shed goes and hopefully he sheds by himself

Plexiglass is another option. Cheaper than glass and won't break as easily :)

Hey, just a quick kind of stupid question; you said the snake was a BP but I thought it looked more Burmese Python-ish. I'm probably wrong because I'm very new to ball pythons, but I've had other snakes. Is there some big distinction between the species I'm not seeing? Thanks! PS I just noticed the head-shape distinction, but are there any other indicators?

Thank you! I did look them up and side by side I can spot the differences. :) And for the huge size gap I wasn't sure the age of the OP's snake, but I definitely know about it.
