There's a dynamic of the whole "live vs dead" arguement that I think gets left out sometimes...I'd like to preserve my snake's natural instincts to ID and strike and constrict etc etc as opposed to just tossing a dead item that they just begin to swallow w/o effort. I mean, we gotta realize that these guys are wild animals after all. There's a reason that zoo's often hide the food they give to scavenger type animals or attach meat to moving ziplines in cheetah cages and thiings like that. Let the ball python be a ball python! What do y'all think?

Not me ... once you take a ball python and stick it in a cage it's not really the same wild animal anymore ... zoos do those things to exercise mammals that normally in the wild would have hundreds of acres of territory to roam on, but have you ever seen a zoo feed their crocs? They just toss the food in. I feed live because it's the cheapest and most convenient method I have available for feeding my collection and it works for my snakes ... if the same were true about F/T, then that's what I'd do.

That "little guy" is 720 grams in that picture to give you some perspective. I have racks filled with females that size ... she weighs A LOT! ... LOL

Yeah I see what you are saying. I guess I'm just playing with the idea that live food might be a little more stimulating for them, and possibly contribute to their overall health in a positive way.

(goes to google and starts researching for any relevent info on this...)

Well, I think that you are on the right track. I was just talking to my vet yesterday about the lack of stimulation and exercise in captive boids and the effect it has on their immune systems and their ability to naturally rid themselves of respiratory infections. The idea of a boid that is so accustomed to eating dead food that it doesn't even use its muscles to constrict anymore is certainly alarming unless there is sufficient supplementary exercise provided.

But in the end, I believe that you must first and foremost make keeping the animal as trouble free as possible on the keeper. In theory, the easier the animal is to care for, the better and more frequent care it will get allowing for an overall healthier specimen. That's just my opinion and certainly not an "answer", because as we all know that there are many ways to keep these animals successfully.

P.S. Just to stay on topic....some days around here it's hard to remember to defrost pork chops let alone a mouse....p/k works for us....don't think my microwave has a "mouse" button like that nifty "popcorn" button (hmmmm could invent that and become insanely rich in the herp community and then afford all the morphs I ever wanted!)

Don't go spending that money just yet. Although a lot of herpers would love a mouse button on the microwave, I'm not sure how well it would go over for their spouses. I'm lucky I can use my freezer for all the frozen rats, I can't imagine telling the wife that I was going to use the microwave, too. :D

P.S. HMM.... I wonder how many replies I'll get about the hazards of nuking a rat? :eyepoppin

Hey Joanna, you are welcome to some pie! My husband's coworker begs for it. I send desserts in to work with him sometimes, and the chocolate stuff never lasts. I do make a mean key lime pie and lemon cake, too! Come on over anytime :D

If I ever wanted to use the microwave I could! Of course I probably wouldn't tell the husband. He's ok with the frozen rodents but only because they're in a freezer all by themselves.

No problems taking my dog, but the inlaws get the creepy crawlies around cute, little 3 inch baby cresties...who knew?!?!

Hmm where to start with THIS post LOL.....

Wendy, if you'd kindly send me the address my 4 hooligans errr children will happily come along with your crew (happily hell I'll stuff em in a FedEx crate and move em out). They can bring the senile cat, the 3 rats and a couple of beta's who don't play well with others. Mike and I would enjoy a day or two with only the snake for company it's really no trouble to us...really....really.

Christie, funny enough my husband's co-workers don't beg me for anything. Not pie, not nuthin! I expect this is due to Mike getting the shakes a work during hell week and giving me a bad rep around there LOL.

As far as my microwave mouse button idea, don't any of you steal that one before I figure out how it would work (exploding mice being my major "issue" at this point LOL).

One last thought to add to the general silliness of this thread (silly is good for the soul tho!). You think it's easy being Canadian. I came from a country that has a beaver as it's dang national symbol...not a cool eagle...or even a regal moose...a freakin buck tooth rodent with rude overtones! This is a trial for me.

Course I once lived in such a redneck Canadian town that our town statue was of a cow. Yep a cow...actual size....big ole udder and all....apparently she was a pretty dang good milk producer but darn it's embarrassing to have that as the only thing the town could think of to honor with a statue. I always wanted to sneak out at night and put some sorta cow bra on that poor thing....she was a bit "blessed" in that department.

I probably shouldn't admit at this point that my girlfriends and I one night (there was some wine involved) dreamed of dolling up Miss Bossy in fishnets, bra and a flowered hat just to liven up the old girl a bit (might have brought in the tourists come to think of it!). Eventual sobriety and a few disgusted husbands nixed that grand plan.

Ohmigosh that was too funny Joanna! :lmao: :giggle: A cow?!?!?! Now there is some good ole hometown pride! :cow: Moooo. lol

I think we may have to pass on more rugrats, tho. 11 kids is quite a bit to handle. And that's counting the husbands as adults which may be a bit of a strech. ;) :D I know the feeling of wanting to ditch the kids and have some adult fun. Of course I've never had any opportunities to dress up a cow statue, but if the opportunity of arises I'll be sure to take pictures :P

Okay I got to thinking about my last post so here's two links....one about dear old Springfield Snow Countess (of the famous cow statue) and another link to towns in the US with cow statues as for some reason it makes me feel better that you Americans can be just as rednecky as any Canuk can be LOL.

Joanna does it make you feel better there are other cow lovers out there in the world? ;) Better yet, if you want to embarass the teenagers you could dress as old bessie and walk them to their classes!! lol :cow: That'll scare the little boogers into some good behavior for at least ... an hour or so. :D

Joanna, I can't wait until the little ones are grown up enough for some good embarassing Mom moments ;) Though your cow stories had me laughing for a good 30 minutes. I even had to show him all the pics (personally, I think your husbands should have let you doll up old Bossy, then bail you out of jail for defacing the beloved town bovine :D ;) )

Adam, Christie is a verrrrrrrry sad little drinker. Two drinks and she's toast, makes her lots of fun at parties (good ammo for little sister ;)

Christie remember my first dewy eyed trip to college, little high schooler that I was thought I was going to get to go drinking, but the site of my wise and normally subdued sister yelling in the center of the quad made me decide babysitting was probably the better option for the nite! :D ....she's gonna kill me....hopefully she's a bigger person and will not share any of my unfortunate stories!!!

Glad to provide a good laff Wendy, we moms always need those LOL. Just remember now when they are little...TAKE NOTES! Save those for future embarrassing moments as payback for busting curfew or bringing home some new wierd boyfriend with pants that hang low and the ability to only form 2 word sentences (one word being Dude of course).

I have sisters too. You know of course you have now opened the floodgates and Christie is I'm sure dragging out some realllllllllly cute Wendy moments to share LOL. Sisters are wonderful but unfortunately take immense pleasure in being the Keepers of All Things Best Forgotten.

One bit of motherly wisdom (and this one is a sure fire winner). If all else fails and the wee demons (errr children) act up at the local Piggly Wiggly it's always effective to break into song (store provided muzak being a just nifty parenting tool). If this isn't immediately effective......offer to add in a bit of choreography! It's a never fail way to get 4 active kids into immediate line, also quite effective as a way to get to go shopping without any of the kids whining to come along LOL.

Joanna...I'm taking notes, the singing one is a riot!!! LOL

My son did get me the other day at the doctors office. He asked what was on my legs and I told him I should probably shave soon....so he starts singing "Mommy needs to shave" over and over....Then he came back and told me not to worry, my legs weren't as hairy as Dad's! Ahhh...and he's only almost 3 :D

Alexrls, Christie and I may have indulged in a little brother dress up as well. Poor Gregory, still complains about it to this day. :)

This is outstanding .... I love it when hot chicks get catty and it's not directed at me!!! NICE

If you guys decide to fight it out and need anything ... boxing gloves, referee, warm oil maybe? .... be sure and give me a call
