Re: My new arrival
He might be over 300 now. I had not posted his latest weight pic so here it is with him being just under. He is eating just fine on the rats. He is taking 2 now. I think the rats are considered fuzzies as for their size. I still have about 25 of them left. I am going to keep using them to use them up. I have some rat pups left over that I hope he will be big enough for when the fuzzies run out.
I have been really busy with work so I have had to skip a feeding or 2 but he still takes them without much trouble. I think he would still take a mouse over a rat. He is a hungry boy so he has not been picky about the rats.

Pyro is looking really nice!

Re: My new arrival
I fed Pyro 2 rat fuzzies yesterday and he took both without any trouble. I still take him out of his enclosure to feed him because it's easy it for me to feed him this way and feed my other 2 snakes.
I also made a short video of Pyro following my finger. He does this all the time either in his enclosure or in the animal tote. He had already eaten both rats but if I would have done this before he ate, he would have probably came up and try to bite my finger. The few times he has done so he immediately let's go and the looks at me like "your are not food, where is my food".
Pyro finishing his 2nd rat.

Re: My new arrival
Fire- I'm just curious, what are the advantages and how is it easier to feed outside the enclosure as opposed to inside the enclosure? Also, how long do you wait before putting the snake back into it's regular enclosure? Are your snakes still in feeding mode when you move them? I used to feed in a separate bin too but it got to be too much of a hassle especially once I had multiple snakes.

I could feed him in his enclosure but I get him out because he is usually in a paper towel tube and his tank has a bunch of fake plants to provide clutter in his tank. It makes it easier to me since I am giving him 2 rats to give him one and while he is eating it I can check/add water for him and the others, spot clean if needed, and any other husbandry maintenance.
Pyro is the only one I feed out of their enclosure.
To put him up, I carry him in the tote to his tank. I just pick him up and hold him down near the floor and let him go wherever he wants to. He is still in food mode and it takes ALOT to fill him up. He will inspect my hands to see if I have another rat but he has never tried to eat my hand other when I trick him like in the video. I have only ever had him get completely full where after I put him back he just stretched out up against the front of the tank and stay for 6+ hours.
I have not researched if getting him that full is good for him or not. He would pull up a chair to the snack bar if you would let him and eat all the time.

Re: My new arrival
Pyro has broke 300g and is well on his way to 400. I was checking on him and saw that he shed. He was weighed and fed.

I shut down my 120gal fish tank after 10 years of having fish. I had this fake log in the tank. I cleaned it up and put it into Pyro's enclosure. He has been crawling all over and in it so far. He has not used it as a hide yet though.

Pyro is stretching out there Fire. How old is he?

Re: My new arrival
Nice. Good job! A little over a year update and glad he is doing well! 120 gallon tank. How spoiled!
-
Re: My new arrival
Pyro will be 2 in August. For some reason my last post about the 120 gal tank did not load right. He is in a 46 gal now and I hope to move him to the 120 gal tank as soon as I find a way to clamp lean or plexiglass to the top. I do not want to mess with the plastic that is on top of the 120. It has a divider piece in the middle and takes double lids as a fish tank. The plastic has a recessed lip that I can get the lean or plexiglass to sit in. I am looking at finding some type of cam clamp to attach the lexan or plexiglass to the lip so that it is escape proof. I have not decided on using lexan or plexiglass yet because I have not called the local glass company to ask which will hold up to having holes drilled into it and a heat of lamp sitting on it. The 120 will be a temporary home to my bredli carpet until I can finish her enclosure and then Pyro will get the 120. I am keeping the 120 as it is so that if I ever decide to get fish again, it will still work as a fish tank.

Re: My new arrival
I almost was able to watch Pyro shed today. I came home from church and checked on him but he still had not shed. I went to clean the inside of the wife's car. I came inside a little latter and he had shed that fast.
He has put on some weight but not as much as I thought he would. I have missed some feedings though due to work and family. I took him outside to play in the grass while the rats were warming up.

Re: My new arrival
Someone did not want to get out of bed to eat. Pyro just went into blue. I got hissed at and a kiss to the finger but he still ate. He finished his last 3 pinkie rats. Next time I will trying to feed with weaned rats so hopefully he will take one. I cleaned his tank the day before and he was out inspecting.

Re: My new arrival
Pyro shed and was weighed. He had a nice gain in weight. He also got his first weaned rat for a meal since he finally ate all the pinkies I had.

Re: My new arrival
Pyro has joined the 500 club. He finally shed while I was at work. He has been roaming his enclosure all morning now that he is done with sheding. I took him outside after I weighed him to see the new skin in the sunlight.

Kings are awesome. I keep hoping my female will get better, but I really think she's got a defect in her guts. My male, though, is great - can't wait until he gets as big as Pyro is! I keep reminding myself to keep the Kingsnake shopping list short.

Pyro is still looking good and growing well Fire. Both of my kings are on a bit of food break. I'm not sure if it's the temps or breeding season. Is Pyro still eating regularly?

Re: My new arrival
Yea he is still eating regular. When he is on shed, I don't try to feed him like I did when he was little. I still have warm weather in SE Georgia so I don't know if that has an affect. I don't think so because he did not reject any food last winter.
The ghost finally shed and as usual I weighed him. I then gave him a rat that he sat with forever as bff's til he figured out how to eat it. This has become the norm but no matter how long he takes, eventually the rat is eaten.

Re: My new arrival
So I partially got to watch Pyro shed. I knew he was about to and caught him getting the skin off of his head. I thought it would take him some time so I sat in my lazyboy, literally in front of him, on the laptop for around 5 min. I got up to check and he was done. I think it took him total 10 minutes to shed after he got it peeling off his head. I don't know how long it took him start peeling it from his head. He had it around his eyes when I noticed what he was doing.
Now he wants a rat, lol. He will get one tomorrow and a cage cleaning too. I weighed him and we are getting close to 700g. If my work schedule had not changed, I think he would weigh more. The change has thrown off how I was feeding him.

I partially filmed it but paused to do something. He shed a lot faster than I thought he would so when I got back up he was done. Next time I will either film the while time with my phone or setup my GoPro lol.

Re: My new arrival
Pyro shed the other day but not has gained any weight. My 48/48 shift sucks with any feed schedule so far.
However, Pyro has moved into his new home. It still needs some more decor and the outside needs some paint. Pyro did take a rat today with no trouble in his new home. He also has a neighbor upstairs as well.

Re: My new arrival
Pyro has had at least 4 sheds since my last post. He stayed below 700g for a few of them then finally surpassed 700. His recent shed had him at 748.
I have been trying to give him 2 seemed rats to finish off what i have so I can order small rats. Pyro likes to hang out with his food for a while before he eats it unless he loses it. So this makes it a pain to feed 2 rats. I don't have many weened rats left and I think he will be back to gaining weight when I start with the small rats.

They can do that when the weather starts to turn colder. If you're wanting to keep him on rats, I'd advise not giving in and feeding mice. He will eat when he's ready.

Re: My new arrival
I am back in school so that keeps me busy. Out I is getting close to be back to his weight when he stopped eating last summer. I have kept him on mice which brought back his appetite. I think I will keep him on mice til I get him a little above his pre food strike weight.
