Ohhhhh, there was a time I would have gone straight sideways over this thread, but let me just calmly put my two cents in and say that while I have NO doubt all the picture posters here know their animals as well as they can be known, putting any canine and any BP in this kind of close proximity is a very bad day waiting to happen. Hope it never happens, but I learned a long time ago, that hope is not a course of action.

I would never put any of my snakes or my dog in a position to potentially be injured or worse. I grew up with Pits, Doberman Pinschers and Rots and I believe they make some of the best dogs when in the hands of RESPONSIBLE owners who are willing to put in the time and work that these working class breeds need. My dog has been professionally trained in obedience, agility and protection, he is a very well rounded dog and I have complete trust in him!. Part of his obedience training was to keep complete focus around distractions. Now our cat is a different story gotta sleep with 1 eye open around him lol. I don't think the OP intended for people to risk their snakes safety to snap a pic with their Bullies, people need to have common sense but we do live in a society where we have to put warning labels on everything so people don't wear plastic bags on their heads or that the coffee in your cup may be hot! lol. For the people who don't appreciate this thread and only have negative comments to make maybe you and your warning labels should go else where. I hope to see more pics of Balls on Bullies from other responsible owners :gj:

sorry, didnt want to de-rail the thread....

i think if you know the snake and you know the dog and if you have reflexes its fine. so i dont really see anyhing wrong with the pictures. if its a really relaxed dog that wont bite, and a really relaxed ball python, and you can instantly intervene, then the risk should be so low that its acceptable.

about the terminology, my suggestion would be to just call them pit bull. these dogs face prejudice and legal problems in some areas that are quite similar to the problems some snakes and exotic pets face, and calling them bullies just sounds suggestive in a bad way. no big deal, just a bad choice of words, for outsiders it just sounds strange and raises eyebrows.

but i would like to see more pics :) if the dog is calm and wont bite, and its not unsupervised and there is someone there who could pick up the snake at any time, i see no problem.

I'm one of 'those' people that made a statement in regards to being cautionary with small animals and bull and terrier breeds. Nothing in my post was unreasonable. It is what it is, and being a long time owner of bull and terrier breeds, I will speak up and state what should be stated when I feel the need to do so, for those out there who may be unaware of the potential risk. I never downed anyone on this particular thread, or stated that anyone on this particular thread doesn't know their dog well. I don't know why anyone is feeling the need to go off on what good dogs these are in responsible hands, etc. I'm well aware. I'm a long time owner/advocate and rescuer of APBT and bull type breeds in general, and part of BEING a responsible owner is being realistic about what could happen, and knowing traits that are common within the breeds. Now back to the regularly scheduled program!

I do not disagree with you that caution should be taken when introducing small animals to terrier breeds, they were bred to hunt and dispatch small game. As APBT and Bully breed advocates we both know the negative associations with the breeds. I try to dispel some of those by showing the breed in a positive light, showing they can interact ( under supervision ) with small creatures, cats, birds, other dogs, Kids.... But I will state again I have spent a lot of time working with my dog and feel I can read him very well. I wouldn't have taken these pics if I thought anyone was in any danger. I do not take any of the constructive comments personal, just wanted people to use common sense :D

I know there's a lot of stigma associated with APBTs and other "bully" breeds (American bulldogs, English bulldogs, bull terriers, sometimes people count boxers, French bulldogs and Boston terriers) and that's related to their high prey drive, but honestly, there are a TON of dog breeds that have really high prey drives. A few of you guys mentioned terriers in general which were bred to kill pests, but even sighthounds like greyhounds have really high prey drives... They use rabbit decoys to get them to race. The only difference is they're not aggressive towards people at all... So you only ever hear about rottweilers, dobermans, chow chows, German shepherds, and other big "guard dog" breeds. But honestly, if you're keeping small animals, you have to worry just as much about a Jack Russel or something. What I'm trying to say is, even though I know we're focusing on pit bulls here, I think any dog poses a risk to a small animal.

I had a greyhound/lab mix that I couldn't trust around my lizard because he got waay too excited whenever he saw small animals. He killed several birds in the backyard, and chased down and killed rabbits that couldn't escape the yard fast enough--even our beagle has killed rabbits (even though beagles weren't bred to kill the prey they find)... I wouldn't trust the GSD/golden retriever mix we have now near my snake, although he has yet to meet her. (I try to keep my cats away from my reptiles too. They haven't met my BP, and they were usually afraid of my water dragon, but one of my cats did try to chew on my CWD's tail before.)

All that said, I know enough about dogs to know what you can accomplish with training. If you've really worked with your dog, you've taught them restraint, and you have absolute confidence that you are in control of the situation, then it's okay as long as you supervise the animals. I didn't see anything wrong with these pictures because these dogs don't have that "I gotta eat that" face I've seen on my dogs. I don't think it's something EVERYONE should try, so yes I think people should be cautious, but if you have the right dog with the right training and calm snakes, then it's probably okay.

To everyone who posted pictures, they're very cute! I love pit bulls and think they're really sweet dogs, although I've never had one :) and sorry for the long post...
