    In my rack I always have an empty tub (no snake in there that is). I do load up with tub with substrate and regulate my temps inside the empty tub with my thermostat probe placed therein. This way I can very accurately see what my temps are inside without the risk of damaging the probe, snake, etc. I know many wouldn't ever dream of leaving a tub empty :P but it works for me.
