Re: ~ German Dog Appreciation Thread! ~
Beautiful dogs!
Mine are Australian, so I can't contribute. xD But! My mother and Grandmother have a house filled with German breeds. My mother has a Rottweiler, a Great Dane and a Standard Poodle. And my Grandmother has a small army of four Dachshunds. ;D The smallest of the Weiners is by far the most vicious. The least likely to bite...or bark...or get up and do anything...is the Rottie.

I recently purchased a new lens and only just got to test it out. Of course I chose my favorite subject for the job! Apologies in advance for the photo dump, I originally edited and uploaded 50 - 60 of them.

Thank you! I really like those types of shots, too, and love taking pictures in the long grass for that reason :)

Thank you, I really appreciate it! I ended up caving and getting the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 lens. Probably a little unnecessary because I already have the 50mm f/1.8, but I actually noticed quite an improvement in quality and speed. The images just come out cleaner in general, and the backgrounds are smooth and the bokeh looks nice. I am a huge fan of it already; the lens certainly lives up to all that hype!

Oh wow, she grew up VERY nicely. She also has a very nice crop job - and I'm really picky about cropped ears on a Doberman. If I remember correctly, she's working bred?

Thank you!
We were worried about her ears when we first got them done. But they turned out better than expected.:)
She isn't from straight working lines. She's from a show line that has working dogs in the pedigree. We weren't ready for a crazy driven working line dog. So we settled for some middle ground. She has enough drive to work, but is not so high strung and is calm enough to be a house pet.
Our next future dog will most likely be working line. Although there isn't very many choices here in the US in regards to traditional working bred dobermans. There are less than a handful of kennels around.

Here's Aria, our pup, at one of her first protection sessions.
Sorry for the crappy quality. My camera did not like night action shots.

I can definitely vouch for the craziness of a working bred dog!! I agree that they can be way too much for anyone who isn't looking for that level of drive specifically. Your girl sounds like she is working out great for what you were looking for, and seems to have both working ability and really great looks! I really like her!
I've noticed the same when it comes to working bred Dobermans - I remember looking around for breeders years ago and got a few recommendations for Landgraf, but that was it. I like the American show lines, too, and probably even prefer their overall structure, but it'd be nice to have more options!
And nice picture and grip! :)

Landgraf is fantastic. They are semi-local to me and their male, Eiko, came in first place at the IPO regionals here last Fall. He was the only doberman in the trial. I do believe their dogs compete overseas as well.
Not my photo, but this is Eiko vom Landgraf at regionals

Another really good doberman kennel is Kondorstrand in Central/Southern California. Some folks seem to think that their dogs are better than Landgraf.

That pointer pup is super cute!
And Dachshunds are awesome dogs! Super spunky and funny little things.

I'm biased towards Dobermans. I can't recommend them enough. Here's my doberman pitch!
They are amazing family companion pets and natural watch dogs. They were bred to be a personal protection dogs, so they do bond to their family and will protect them with their life. They are extremely affectionate, observant, loving, loyal, obedient, intelligent, and really easy to train. They learn quickly and do think things out. Out of all the other breeds I've ever had, the dobies picked up things much quicker. Not to mention that if someone was to see a dobie in your yard, they're most likely not going to try to break in. And the short hair was what sold us completely since our shepherd sheds way too much for our liking. We really like the low maintenance of not having to spend much time in the grooming department.
But no matter what breed you choose, do a lot of research and always go to a reputable breeder who does have health guarantees and health testing. The doberman is plagued with some fatal genetic illnesses (Von Willebrand and Dilated Cardiomyopathy), so health testing is really important.
-
And spending the money on a good breeder. Makes no sense to go the cheap route and then get slapped with thousands of dollars worth of vet bills because the breeders didnt get the parents tested.
I couldn't agree more Satomi, at least for me, Dobes just seem like they are perfect. Now if only I could convince my landlord about adding a dog to the nearly 200 other animals in the house....:please:

Really nice! I really wish I could see more Doberman Pinschers in IPO, as they still remain one of my favorite breeds. I've been to my dog's breeder's club several times before and the helper there had a Doberman he was working at one point, but I don't see that dog around anymore. At the DVG National trial earlier in the Fall, there were mostly GSDs and Mals/Dutchies, but also a Rottweiler and two American Bulldogs. No Doberman, unfortunately. One day I would love to see one on the field in person.
Thanks for letting me know about Kondorstrand! I will be visiting Southern California at least once in the next few years, and wouldn't mind stopping by. Currently I think my next IPO breeds will be a German Shepherd and/or a Malinois, but if I could see nice working bred Dobes in action, I'd be sold. Although now that Riesenschnauzers have been mentioned, I'd like one of those, too!! Love the one I watched at the trial, and I hear Armin Wrinkler has some very, very powerful Riesenschnauzers.

Malligator!! She is so adorable! What a fluff ball!
Don't worry. She'll for sure play frisbee with you.
Malinois are heat seeking missiles!!
You should consider working her in IPO/Schutzhund!
Malinois always do the best.

I want to put her through it all but my wife is a little unsure about bite work. If I get my way she will be trained in everything. I have been looking for a dog like this for some time now. Opportunity came up and we jumped on it. She is going to be a lot of fun. :D

My mom's new little beasty. He was impossible to get a picture of! He was fascinated with the camera , and every time he saw me trying to get a picture, came running over. Lol. So they held him still. This was the only decent pic I got of him.

Our first day of Schutzhund. Did some basic tracking, and some tug! Little beast impressed on her first day. And the director is very confident that Belle will do really well! Excited for next Sunday to continue our training! :)

She has lost all of her puppy teeth and almost has all of her adult teeth fully grown in so she could start learning to work the sleeve soon. Looking forward to that.
