At the end of the day there is no argument between the Galaxy S3 and the iphone5. The GS3 wins hands down. The argument with every iphone user isn't which phone is better, but rather how much people have dumped into apple products. My brother in law has every apple product and has had and an iphone since the first one came out. He would constantly argue with me saying that his phone was better. Then his work gave him an S3 and now he never uses his iphone, only his work phone. The problem with apple is that many people have invested so much money into the apps ipods ipads and iphones that they don't want to feel like it was all a wasted thus they stay with their said apple products.
You, sir, will never be satisfied until the world bows down to your "superior" attitude.
I like my iPhone. I prefer it to android. All versions of android including jelly bean.
Why are you so belittling to those of us who prefer iOS?

I upgraded to this phone recently. It's the best and if you say otherwise it'll leave a nice bump on your noggin! http://i400.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps28ddd9f0.jpg

Widgets are the best!
I hate the whole debate and fanboi-ism (both sides), pick which works best for you and enjoy it. I am an Android girl but have recommended the iPhone to some folks and Android to others.
But yeah, love my widget filled home screen...

Google has already submitted a Maps app for the App Store so that won't be an issue for anyone unhappy with iOS Maps. As for the phone being a failure, I suggest you take some time with one. After using an iPhone 5 today I can safely say it's the most impressive piece of mobile tech I've ever used. The processor outperforms Quad Core and dual core S4 Krait processors with double the Ram. That's in benchmarks and actual use. The 5's browser opens pages in their entirety in about 2 seconds and apps open instantly.
The screen is gorgeous, the speaker is the best available on a phone at this point.
As far as tethering, that's done by carriers. The only phones that can pull it off nowadays are Nexus devices and some other unlocked international devices that don't register as Smartphones with the carrier.
Apple vs Android will always be a battleground, but the iPhone 5 is a game changer. For those that say it's a stretched 4, again you need some hands on time. It's super thin, extremely light and feels like a million bucks in your hand.
I've used every OS extensively, and I always go back to iOS. My last phone was an unlocked Galaxy Nexus and I rather enjoyed it. The 5 blows the doors off of it in actual usage.
Nothing else touches the camera on the iPhone 5 either in actual usage. That's in picture quality and the speed it can take photos. Specs are what Android fans keep in their back pocket for debates such as this. Specs are great on paper, but laggy performance on new Android devices (including the GS3) are proof that they aren't a be all end all. The 5 has assured that I will not be jumping from device to device any longer.

Unless for some reason the app isn't compatible with the device, any android device can tether for free, the market has them sitting right there. GS3 and droid x2 both tether just fine, along with many of my friends phones. so no that is not true. Also i don't see how the camera on the GS3 can be called laggy by any means. its the of the first things i notice switching from the droid x2's camera to the GS3, i hit the button and it takes it less than a 1/10 of a second and can fire photos of rapidly. It's something that stood out to me early. The x2 had a lag, lag on the gs3... sorry.
frog asked to compare the phones based off of specs, so I did, simple as that. He keeps saying they are even, while they are clearly not, based off of specs. I can save him the trouble and tell him only spec advantage iphone has is the higher pixel density, which is because of the smaller screen. besides that gs3 out specs the iphone. 320 something to 300 something, not a huge difference, but iphone wins that one
I can't speak for the iphone 5 usage, havn't had a chance to play with one yet.
The tether issue is that apple keeps removing tethering apps so you have to use theirs. At least here in the US. US carriers have a pay to use wifi hotspot on the os and won't let you use it unless you agree to a tethering plan. After it got brought up yesterday i tired it with the girlfriends sister iphone 4 last night, it prompted me for the tethering plan.

My iPhone is the best and the new maps is 100% better. Thanks apple

The screen size doesn't matter. The iPad 3 and there laptops have even better pixel density.
This is so ridiculous. I like my iPhone and you like your droid. Don't go putting us down because we like something "not as superior" as your droid. Just get over it and move on with your life.

OWAL Im in Germany with a German provider, so again cannot speak for U.S. carriers. But I have no idea what a teathering plan is, sounds crazy to me....... I can turn on hotspot, no questions asked, and connect via wifi, usb and blootooth and dont pay anything extra. Although German laws are better when it comes to cell contracts.

All I can say is again on a second computer I am sending via cell data and internet sharing via usb now again just a matter of turning it on and plugging it in. It is dead easy. I just use phones I don't muck with them much and if internet tethering is hard I would hate to see easy I as I said have never done it on a phone ever and it is just a single slider I have a normal plan (pay as you go) in fact and tethering is not a problem noting to change just one single slider and pairing the phone if it is not already done and bluetooth and a setting on the system and presto. Not very difficult. It always seems this way non apple people telling apple people how hard it is to do ––– whatever and in the end it is like most apple things dead easy.
I can't say much about the 5 as speculation is not something I like doing.

As an IT consultant I just picked up my new Iphone 5 today on renewal for my company phone. But I personally own a GS3 I love both phones they are great I like to be able to customize my interface with the Android OS etc and tether.
But honestly I don't spend as much time as I used to playing around on my phone, so I feel in the aspect of ease of use, speed of use for your basic phone user the Iphone has always been the better phone.
For the more techie folks that enjoy the more advanced features and are willing to put up with the quirks of the OS due to the open OS(droid) vs the closed OS(apple) I believe that the Droid phones have always been the better phone.
Each OS has its perks but anyone that just wants a phone to use for calls, text, email, and simple web browsing, and games. I would recommend the IPhone all day. And as an IT consultant I am not allowed to make fanboi decisions on what my client needs or wants.

I didn't put anyone down, if your phone is everything you want, why are you getting all worked up? btw ipad 3 is only 264 ppi, nice but not as nice as the iphone 5 or gs3.

twisting words again..... Either phone out specs the iphone 5. Compare how ever you wish. I just figured the one most people on here would have would be the one you want to compare. I never said one version was better, one has twice the ram, other has nearly twice the processor. but do as you wish, remember this... all i did is answer.

How does location effect tethering? The settings are the same no matter the location or language for that matter. Just a single slider a paired phone and done. I have never used tethering and I did so both cabled and bluetooth. It took no time at all. No effort and no problems perhaps why you are saying this is difficult I can't imagine. If your area is not compliant with a cellular data it is hardly the phone's issue. I guess in the Lawrencetown is more advanced than Detroit.

US carriers prompt you for the wifi tethering plan. Apparently they don't in the rest of the world. It would't be a big deal at all if you could download a tether app from the app store, but apple keeps removing them. So your choices are pay for the tethering plan ( you know because you're not paying for the data already...), or jailbreak and side load, which voids any warranty and some insurance plans. There are other 3rd party options which you still pay for but are cheaper than tethering plan. If it was simple as you say in the US, things like this wouldn't exist http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7...st-$30-yearly/
Android on the other hand I just download an app and I'm on my way.

I just saw pics of it last night after this battle I've been watching on here and I have to say it sure does look sexy. Much more so than the GS3, but I've always lived the apple design.

Oh and BTW, saying that the iPhone fails is not an attack on any one person or their preferences. It's an, opinion statement.
No one would get upset if I said "McDonald's fails again, new spicy chicken bites aren't as great as the commercial shows" no one else in their right mind reads that as "you like mcds and I like bk so I'm superior to you" they see it as what it is, an opinion, about a single product an entire company created. If you are getting butt-hurt (or if you assume this is directed at you) take a look at what is actually being said. No one is putting you down. Yes, they are pointing out their opinions on a product you like/may own, but thats ok... You can start a rebuttle thread if it makes you feel better :D:D

So what you are saying is the carriers in the states suck? The iphones suck because the carriers are not playing fair and want you to pay for a service? My car sucks because the bob's garage has bad service. That is hardly the phones fault. So you say apple should allow you to steal a service?

how am i stealing? I pay for the data and I paid for the device. It's like if you go to the gas station and they make you pay more for the gas in the lawn mower vs the gas in your car. Apple could allowing tethering apps and problem solved.

I don't see the necessity of phone tethering. :/ You will likely always have the phone with you while you may or may not have the laptop. So in theory, you would be able to access the information anywhere. My iPhone has all the capabilities of my laptop, plus some. Why do I need them tethered? I suppose I just don't understand why tethering is such a BIG deal to you OWAL?
As to iOS 6...I like it so far. I'm not sporting an iPhone 5, but my 4S performs nicely. At least for the moment. Being that the tech specs are really not that different between iPhone and Android, it really comes down to aesthetic preference for most. Apple doesn't need to come out with a monster sized phone like Android to compete. Many prefer apple to android because of their design.
And Mike, I have normal sized pockets! Most of the time...lol.
-
I read the us version of my plan and if you pay for tethering you get tethering third party apps are not needed unless you are trying to hack the service contract to get something you have not paid for. Again it is not a hardware issue it is a provider issue setting up tethering is super easy if you have paid for it and your provider supports it.
-
Jailbroken Phone tethering is a joke. The carriers will throttle your data once you've gone past a certain limit. Even if you have "unlimited" data. I've tethered before and it barely works. Its the slowest internet on the planet.
Is tethering really the final deciding factor when it comes down to which phone is "better"? There is no such thing.
These phones are all good at what they do and are not comparable.
Android has a rough time because it has to write software to be used over many different devices, most of which the OS has no control over the phone. Some people call that a deficiency but I think that is a selling point.
Apple has complete control of the OS and the device, making it more streamlined.
They both have pros and cons. The iPhone is a great phone, but so is my galaxy nexus :)

I've tethered fine off my Android without additional service fees. I was even able to play modern first person shooter games on online servers with other co-op players without any sort of lag or loss of connection. Overclocking anyone?
I use tethering when my university network is jammed up during class. It's much faster connecting my laptop to the phone in this case.....I have unlimited data, so it hasn't been a problem....
I haven't read the whole thread. Either way, I've used apple products in the past. Had a bunch in highschool. Had an iPhone. And I won't ever go back to it. I find that my Android phones have been far superior in regards to 'smart phone' and capabilities. I just can't stand iPhones.
My mom has an iPhone. My dad has an Android. There will always be people who prefer one over the other. The argument is pointless....
And I have to say the new power plug for the iPhone is stupid. I know its a marketing ploy, but it should just be the universal mini USB like every other phone and accessory out there....

Re: iPhone 5 fails again...
tethering is something my device i own does, it is not a service. the service is the data being delievered to my phone, which i pay for. They have no say over what i do with my device i own, about all they can do is say my warrenty is void. which they dont.
i work in construction there is never any wifi where i work, if i want to work on anything i can now. play onlines games or do w/e i wish. heck when power goes out, it doesnt limit me. i also travel around, again im never limited. if its not a big deal to any of you thats fine. i never said iphone was sucked, those were your words, i just said i never understood the appeal to it. im not limited with android. apple limits me in more ways than one, widgets, unapproved apps, customizability and in the us free tethering. with those perks, i get a phone that outspecs another for the same price.
i still have yet to see anyone bring up a point on how the iphone is better. however seem to have no problem justifying where it lacks. if its the right phone for you, so be it. why are you arguing though and getting all worked up? no one is attacking you personally. my mom uses a flip phone with a full keyboard and a very simple OS, its the perfect phone for her and i wouldnt recomend anything else for her. shes not going to argue its a better phone or better OS. its just better for her.
ill go back to my FF7 now :)

Tethering in general is an amazing thing. All throughout college I used it when traveling between Boston and NY. Either the bus had no Wi-Fi or it was just overloaded by everyone trying to use it. So I tethered to my phone instead :-). Got a lot projects done on those 4 hour trips.

That's what it boils down to, people need to use what THEY like, and not argue which is better :D
No ones phone is better in any way to someone else's preference. For ME, iPhone is better and that's where its at. For OTHERS, android is king. I don't hate on them for liking android as I expect them to not hate on me for liking apple products. I have had many many android users basically tell me I'm an idiot for liking the iPhone. When I ask if they have ever tried it, its always "no, I don't need to". I just don't understand how someone can hate something so much that they have never even tried? Even if they said they did try it, it was usually the first or second Gen. IPhone has come along way since then. But even if they did try it and not like it, why does it matter if I do? Enjoy what you like and let me enjoy mine :)

Oh also I noticed that several of these opinions on iOS vs Android are formed based on the consumer experience.
Just out of curiosity... do we have any app developers here? I would like to hear some opinions on which OS is preferred.
As far as I know, apps are implemented in Objective C for iOS. I also hear that that Apple has some pretty robust developer tools and documentation especially in terms of implementing UI and design (Ever wonder why some iOS apps look better than their Android counter parts?) Android apparently not so much. A few years back, my friend actually switched from Android to iOS because he found it easier to to develop apps for.
At the same time, Android uses Java, one of the most commonly used languages in th programming world. Objective C might pose as a challenge to those who are not familiar with C or C++ (pointers for example). Speaking of pointers, Objective C does not have garbage collection for iPhone. AND I got to say that with Android you have much more freedom with what you can do. Whereas iOS is much more constrained.
-
I could see where using Java could be more user friendly, but I adore C++ over Java. I haven't tried my hand at programming for either but I'm going to start because I want a good record keeping program that isn't 25 USD.

I wrote an app, my brother has made a few. one thing I thought was interesting is is cost 200 dollars for the first year and 100 dollars each year after to have an account to put apps out on apples store, android is a one time 20 dollar lifetime fee.
I think the differences in them are going to depend on the programming experience of the person. if you know C, then ios will not have much of a learning curve, if you know java, android isn't going to have much of a learning curve. I only wrote my app (bending calculator for work) in android, I knew a little bit of java from gaming bots, but still took some time. My brother writes his apps in actionscript (flash) then has something to port them to w/e OS he wants so he can write one thing and have it work on iOS, Android, Blackberry, and I think it might even work for window phones (not 100% sure on that one tho)
so yea I think it will still be the same preference argument lol. I've herd other say you can do more with android apps, but i don't know specifics.

Why is the charger being changed such a huge deal? As technology advances this must change. You didn't hear people getting all ticked off when the Xbox 360 changed the cord from the original Xbox. I don't think it's a big deal at all, my car charger has a spot for a USB so I take the cord off the wall and put in my car. I know, mind blown

Well I mean, I use it and I love it. I hear of people having issues with it, but not I. It has put me exactly where I ask every time I punch in an address.

I use apple maps and google I can say that in my area apple is far more accurate when I start a trip apple actually understands my house where google thinks I live a click down the street. It is interesting to see so many americans bashing the iphone when apple stock has such an impact on the american economy. I personally as often as I can buy local made, Canadian made, American made then Europe and Asia. If it costs a bit more so be it. I would much rather put money into a economy that does me some good than ship my money to Korea.

Apple failed the first time it was ever released. The fact that they try to lock everything to iTunes so you have to spend more money is complete BS. It has a nice look and feel but that's as far as it goes.

iPhone 5 fails again...
Here's my take on the whole Apple vs Android thing. I'm not especially tech savvy, and don't want to be. I use my phone to check emails, make calls, send texts, and look up simple things on the Internet. I've had 2 generations of android phones, my significant other has had 2 generations of iPhones. As far as I can tell, I wouldn't use either phone to its full potential, and both phones can do what I want. When I am due for an upgrade this winter, I will probably switch to an iPhone (my Sprint guy tells me the 5S will be out by then, so it will be that or the 5). Why? Because my SO and I own a business together and use all apple stuff for that. My phone and my ancient laptop are the only non apple things we have, and when the laptop dies I'm getting a MacBook. Some of the sharing stuff between the apple devices is pretty cool...I guess I am a huge dork but I love the shared grocery list thingy (right now I use it on my iPad).
As far as the USB tethering/mobile hotspot issue, I'm getting ready to turn on the mobile hotspot capability on the phone I have now because I'm traveling quite a bit. The Sprint guy has informed me that I can turn it on for the months where I will need it, and off when I don't, and I will still be able to use it if I get an iPhone. I don't really mind paying for it even though I have unlimited data. The way I interpret the contract is, I pay for unlimited data FOR MY PHONE, not for any device under the sun. If I would like data to use for my laptop, iPad, or another phone, then I can pay for that data, either by paying to use the hotspot on my phone or getting a contract with one of those portable hotspot things. IMO, the hotspot on the phone is better for me, because there isn't a contract, and I'm carrying the phone around already.
So there you have it, the opinion of a non tech savvy person.
