One small tip--I took off about 40 pounds, a much smaller amount of weight, using calorie counting.

The 'trick' to it was to stick to it absolutely religiously...except for 1 day every 2 weeks. On that day, you get to eat whatever you want, as much as you want, the more horrifically high in calories the better. It was a friend of mine who tipped me off to this.
If you're combining it with lots of physical activity and exercise, you can do it once a week.

What it does, is fool your metabolism into thinking the famine is all over with, so it can stop storing fat--as a result, you lose weight faster after the 'splurge' day, and you don't plateau. I lost 2 to 3 pounds steadily every week for the entire time.

Folks are correct that it takes longer to lose a smaller amount of weight, though. Took me about 5 months.

The other positive point to this is that it makes it easier, psychologically, to say no to treats, snacks, and other goodies. You simply tell yourself that you can have them--you just have to wait until that day comes up. (In reality, your stomach will have shrunk, and you will not remotely be able to eat every thing that you put off for later on that day, lol).

I will warn that this trick does NOT work for a low carb diet. Low carb diets are intended to be permanent diets. Cheating doesn't just add a few calories, it destroys the metabolic shift you were trying to induce, and it takes 3 days to reset. I did try a low carb diet, but found that my metabolism would not adapt to it--I had 0 energy, and was unable to function on it, and lost no weight at all after 3 weeks.

I have gone from 275 to 175 and everywhere in between. It is a constant struggle, and even when you meet your goal, you can't give up. I am on my way back down from 255, and reading this thread has motivated me to get serious about it again. Congrats on making the decision to give it your all, and good luck in your endeavor!

I want to add a little bit. I know what you mean about veggies. EWWWWW!!!

But, the secret I found is herbs. That's right, herbs. By adding different kinds of herbs to veggie dishes, I found out that vegetables CAN taste good. Who'd have thought ?

Also, try different methods of cooking or not. Steamed broccoli will make me yak, no joke. BUT, hit the same broccoli with olive oil, sea salt, balsamic vinegar and a touch of garlic and bake it in the oven for about 20 minutes, and I'll lick the pan clean.

Same thing with bell peppers. I can't stand bell peppers, cannot stand them. But, I have learned that roasting them in a 450 degree oven for about 15 minutes until they are soft, then slipping off the skins before dicing them up and adding them to a dish is actually good.

My new favorite dish is really simple and really good. Take an ear of corn, shuck it and silk it, cut or break it into 3 pieces. Take two yellow potatoes and cut them in wedges, leave the skin on. Take a handful of baby carrots, or even a big carrot cut into small pieces. Put these three things into a baking dish and sprinkle generously with Fat Free Italian Dressing. Add a sprinkle of water and cover it with foil. Put it in a 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes. Then remove it from the oven, take off the foil, and add a zucchini or yellow squash cut in pieces and a handful of fresh green beans. Toss the veggies in the dressing so they are all coated, and return the foil. Put back in the oven for about another 15 minutes, then serve. I could eat this stuff all day long.

So experiment! Even if you start out with just one thing, keep eating that one thing until you decide you really won't vomit if you eat it, then add another. Learning the tastes you have now took time, and learning new tastes will as well.

Well wasnt this all just a big disappointment....

I really didnt think that it would be possible to let everyone down like I said but obviously I did.

3 months later I guess I can say I failed miserably. I only worked on this for about a week and then I got my car accident law suit money and I stopped and never started back up.

I seriously feel so terrible. I got everyone's hopes up and so much support. But thats what happens when you are a huge procrastinator. It doesnt take much to stop something when I get out of the "groove"

But wait. Theres hope. Really? Yes really. No way?! Yes way!

You best not be lying. I am not!

Well I got my first tattoo last week! Well this artist has tattooed my mom and my sister and her boyfriend before so I decided it was my turn!! But anyways. After I got my tattoo my mother had another scheduled for a few days after mine. Well I didnt go becuase I had to baby sit my new puppy. Anyways when he sits down my mom to tattoo her he says :

" I really like your son, he seems like a really cool guy and all, but..... I think he is really unhealthy and he is going to have heart attack soon"

Then he continues on... he says " I go to the gym every night after work and I want your son to start coming with me. I will even switch gyms to the one closest to your house and I will even pick him up"

"Best of all I have a friend at that gym who is a personal trainer and will train your son and give him a years gym membership for $200"

That was pretty much the whole convo.

When my mom told me this I was flabbergasted. I was like... really? He said that? No way.

Now one of the reasons I was so shocked is because my tattoo artist is a really hard guy I guess you could say. He has big balls and isnt afraid to speak up and say whats on his mind LOL. He really didnt seem like this type of guy. Like he is a complete stranger to me and cared about me and wants to help me????!!! I was utterly shocked.

Also his wife is a personal trainer and a nutritionist as well.

So yah. I am going to do this. As soon as I get the $200 and gym clothes. It kinda made me realize that this is my last chance and I need to jump on it before I lose it.

Kinda funny how some things work out eh? I go and get my first tattoo and end up with an offer that will change my life.

That and if I dont accept he will probably shun me forever and never tattoo me.

But if I do accept he said he is gunna ride my butt so hard (no homo) so that should be fun lol.

Well yah. Here is to another new beginning! Lets hope this one sticks. Because I really have no choice this time! Cuz if I stop I might get my butt kicked... literally :( LOL!!

Ahhh the slippery slope of weight loss. Did you know that your body, everyone's body, loves fat sooooo much that when you start to work out you'll actually gain weight before you start to lose it? Weird, but true.

Don't give up, keep with the program, even if you have to slim it down to begin with. Work out more and eat less and you WILL lose weight. Less can also be better, more healthy than you do now.

Give it at LEAST 6 weeks. You may not see much change at all before that, but if you keep on keeping on, you will after that. This is the voice of experience speaking to you.

    Good luck and don't quit.

Sometimes stuff just happens. I mean yeah, sometimes we make excuses, but it's in the past and you can't go back you can only move forward.

When I started on the same trek, I made a list of reasons why. Like...
Wanting to be able to take a hike and not feel like dying.
Wanting to feel better about myself.
    Etc, etc

I put that list where I can read it while doing exercises, or stick it in my pocket while I take a walk. It helps keep me motivated when no one else is around to do so.

I also made little gift goals. If I got down to a certain weight, I was allowed to buy something big for myself. One of those things was my puppy. ^_^

I'm still on the trek now, I had some of the "stuff happens" this last year. My health went down the drain, but I keep pushing through. I haven't lost much this year, but I'm slowly starting to feel better regardless. Gaining a little endurance I suppose. It's certainly not going to happen overnight, so don't get discourage! Good luck! You'll get there.
