The scientific community has always been largely driven by money and politics. You need to ask yourself "who is paying" before looking at any research. Even if the research the scientists do proves against what whoever paid for it wanted, it will state exactly what they wanted it to say. Scientific research is doctored toward the institution's desires. To think that there was once some kind of golden age of truth (at least within reason, mind that philosophers of old were often less driven by politics) where scientists accurately represented their research without bias is foolish. Same with politics. Same with business. Same with most things.

Human's corrupt that which they touch, few are truth seekers and honorable. And even when they are there are usually people above them who arent.

Global warming is grossly over-exaggerated, but that doesnt mean it's entirely false. Global warming is not what it sounds or what a lot of people seem to assume it is, simply put it's human's effecting the environment in negative ways that are becoming far reaching, global even, and causing climate change. Dont throw the concept entirely out the window, and dont accept everything you hear. People seem to like to believe that they are innocent and everyone else is at fault, it's much harder to take a critical look at oneself and try to see their flaws. Thus people who are environmentalists can blame the people who pollute and people who pollute to a higher level like to throw the idea they are doing something wrong out the window.

As to the topic of fishing, if you are licensed to do so and arent breaking the law and you consider the impact you are having on the animals yourself and make an informed, rational decision, then you are fine, if you are fishing illegally then you are taking malicious action against the environment and the people who are licensed to do so.

As far as how much shark steak? The ENTIRE shark minus the head and guts is used for food. The head and guts don't exactly go to waste either... The blue crabs that live under the dock were very thankfull.

My son had to fight this one for about 30 minutes...

Tikall is correct. BG will be the first to tell you that he doesn't believe everything some of the so called "scientists" say about things around the world(isn't there 100,000 Burms in the Glades), but it doesn't take a "scientists" to know that given the numbers of Sharks being killed around the world....there's gonna be a problem. It's not like they produce hundreds of babies every year.

The Red Snappers will more easily bounce back if there is a problem by reducing fishing for a few years.

If you think posting your pics bothers Big Gunns in any way. You don't know Big GUnns that well. All your pics do is prove what BG already knows about yah. That may not be what you think either.:P:D

BG isn't against fishing. Big GUnns loves to fish. BG just thinks Sharks are an awesome creature that deserve a leeetle respect. It's not like it's really any sport to catch one. Any bozo(obviously) can do it.:D Big Gunns is sure you'll go right on killing them. Then you'll go home and brag to everyone(like you did here) how tough you are. If you really want to show how tough you are. Next time get in the water and hold a fish in your hand....then kill the Shark. BG will go fishing with you to see you do that.:D

BG has a proposition for you Mikey. He will grace you with his presense on a fishing trip...but...we need to let all Sharks go. You can take all the pics and video you want...but you need to let them go. We'll see if you feel better about yourself knowing you let such an majestic(Willy big word) animal go free.

Now Big Gunns needs to go and eat his organic eggs and humanely killed cow steak.:D

ps. SHHHHHH...Don't tell Mikey...but BG is gonna chum the waters and then throw Mikey overboard on that fishing trip.:D

Nice pics Mike. You guys must have some serious fish fries! :gj:

The government does not love sharks. The media lives for incidents like shark attacks, most people are terrified of them, and little is understood about them. This is not the sort of animal the government protects to win public favor. With the way they reproduce and the way they're being hunted, is it that hard for you to believe they're actually in trouble?

Come on Doc...everyone knows that Big Gunns loves when people try the "personal abuse" tactic on him. You're spoiling all BG's fun....and his fans aren't gonna be that happy either.;):D

Big Gunns and Mikey are big boys....he's pretty sure BG and Mikey can handle any "personal abuse" thrown our way. :sabduel::sabduel:

On a side note. BG just went for a mountain bike ride and saved a few helpless tadpoles and snails that kids had netted out of a lake. The poor leeetle guys were left out in the sun to die. BG is so proud of himself.:D:D

Real fisherman know exactly how to handle sharks, and don't have to let it "bleed out and die" for 30 mins.

Numbers are infact down around the entire world, and I for one don't approve of you killing Tiger sharks, let alone any other shark. Good to see you teaching your kids ignorance too.

I hope this post is still around in 10 years when fishing is at it's lowest it's been ever. ;)

There are plenty of "scientists" that disagree with the "scientists" that claim the numbers to be so low... The problem is quite simple.... These "scientists" that claim that their numbers are low GUESS how many are taken each year... Then they compare that number to what they GUESS the world shark population to be. That is an aweful lot of guessing to be considered "scientific" if you ask me. I would much rather trust what I see with my own eyes each and every trip out and under. You call probably call it ignorant... I call it common sense.

Tell me great fisherman of the seas, what IS the correct way to kill a thrashing 8 foot tiger shark? I would love for everyone to consider me a tuff guy!!!!

I can tell you with my many years of experience that by the book when you are facing a larger shark you are supposed to either repeatedly beat it in the head with a metal bat or pipe or hit it with a powerhead... Once it is stunned cut its throat and get it to bleed out asap . If the blood is not drained from the system right away, the urea deteriorates into ammonia and results in the pungent odor and dry taste characteristic of poorly handled shark meat. I have tried these methods, and trust me the round to the head is much more humane and effective.

It (catching the shark, shooting the shark, landing the shark, taking the shark home and havesting the meat) is perfectly legal by the way for the ONE shark you are allowed to keep per day, per boat.

I will let the comment regarding my kid slide with no further comment as a favor to Dr dell. You can keep your comments about be teaching my son to fish to yourself going forward.

:) I will agree to this on two conditions... 1.) you buy the liquid refreshments and 2.) you agree to eat a perfectly prepared shark steak from a previous trip when we return from our trip. Well see if you feel better about yourself having a full belly of the most tender steak you have ever eaten after fighting giant fish all day.

    Food for thought:

Environmental BS can be manipulated to support either side of any argument...

Consider this, those of you who think I am some environmental bad guy.... consider the many endangered sea turtles, sharks, and seals I saved by killing and eating this 1 beast... After all the endangered sea turtles, other sharks, and seals are some of the most common food items for adult tiger sharks.... :salute:

Heck they even eat SEA SNAKES!!!!

Yes he is, but that still doesn't stop these over zealous nazis:D(hope BG isn't offending) from giving BG infractions. BG has three to be exact. Funny thing is BG didn't feel like he did anything wrong all 3 times. BG usually knows when he's pushing the limits, but these 3 times BG felt like he was wronged.:taz::taz:

HMMMM. Do you know you actually have a leeetle bit of a point there Mikey? BG does like turtles and snakes better than Sharks, but he's still gonna refrain from killing them. It more the Tiger Shark than any old Shark. They're just such an awesome Shark that BG just couldn't bring himself to kill one.:(

Like BG stated earlier. He doesn't believe everything that scientist say, but he does believe that Sharks may be in trouble in the future.

BG has to do a leeetle research now, but he thinks he can prove there is a problem in one country in particular right now from over fishing. This is from personal experience actually.

As coincidence would have it fans. It's Shark week on discovery.:gj:

It would be interesting to see what you can find on this. Problem is though for every "scientist" that makes a claim about low numbers, there is another "scientist" that disagrees. This is where common sense and personal observation and experience comes into play.

It is a blast! And it does take lots of knowledge, energy, strength, and patience to get them in. Those that think it is as simple as throwing bait on a hook, waiting for the stupid shark to bite, then reeling them in don't have a clue. This shark weighed over 200lbs and he was caught using 50lb mono. I used an 8/0 penn reel and pole that I found on the ocean floor the previous dive trip.... Using that pole and reel I just rebuilt made it TWICE as fun!!!

Shark fishing is big in Fl right now because 1) the number of sharks hanging around the reefs is much higher then usual and 2) bottom fishing ain't that much fun when there is currently a ban on red snapper!

    No problem on the "Captain".

"Quite disturbing" to you....comical to BG.:P:D

As far as BG's leeetle research...he couldn't find anything in print yet, but he will say this. Big GUnns was recently in a country with many islands(ask BG's "special friend"...he'll tell you where BG was huh leeetle spy with nothing better to do than watch BG):D. BG was doing a leeetle snorkeling. Now BG may like Sharks, but he doesn't like to swim with them so BG asked the locals about Sharks. Their response was "there are no Sharks". BG asked why there were no Sharks around any of these islands. They responded "we caught them all". Every last single one of them. Now they go to other close by countries to catch them and are arrested by those countries if they have them in the boat. Now this is personal BG experience from people with no reason to lie. BG didn't state this to begin with because he is up to something top secret.;):D
