So.. no, you don't. A limb is localized, although a major injury. It's way different than the injury to this snake. A lost limb you can cover the bone end to let a stump heal. This snake in the pic already looks thin, and with major injury and how much healing it would need to do, I doubt it would have even a small chance, plus the entire time it would be in horrible shape and tearing the wounds open every time it moved, since the wounds are down it's back.

This snake had less than a 5% chance of survival. It would not be able to eat until it healed because to constrict a prey item would cause the wound to split back open! It could take months to heal! It would be scar tissue and the skin would be tight and pull to that side so I don't know if a snake would be able to eat again! He did the right thing by not letting it suffer to death! Just my opinion but I would have done the same! It would be a very tough choice though!!

they can go a long time without eating when they are established adults. This snake was under weight to begin with and looked to be well under a year old.

It would not have made it.

Even if this snake had been treated, I'm sure he wouldn't have lasted much longer. And if he did, it would be a long, and very painful recovery. They often don't show it, but I'm sure that guy was in an ungodly amount of agony. You did the right thing in putting him out of his misery.

Also, a blunt, heavy strike to the head is probably one of the quickest and most humane ways to do it. It kills the brain directly. Cutting the head off though - I've also heard that this will NOT immediately kill a snake most of the time. The head can supposedly remain alive for up to an hour. I don't know if there's scientific evidence of this, but I'm sure you could find sources on the subject. (I learned of this while writing a report on rattlesnake roundups for my Vet. Science class in high school, and needless to say, I was horrified by it.)

    RIP, little snakey.

I agree you did the right thing. The way you did it was the fastest and less painful (I couldn't have done it) way. RIP little ball, may you be healed and live a wonderful life over the rainbow bridge.

This made me so sad. :( People should see what proper supervision could prevent.

Ignore the hate mail Bowser, after actually taking the time to read this entire thread I agree that you did the right thing.
I've seen pictures of mouse and rat bites before, but good lord nothing like that. Its almost needless to say my eyes were feeling abit watery just reading through everything and knowing what you had to go through <we had to dispatch one of our pets before years ago, I wont go into detail.>
You did what you had to do and I agree that it was an effective and humane way of doing it.

Im also going to copy and keep this pictures. I know a couple people who feed live and arent afraid to walk away for awhile. Maybe this will help.
    Thank you for posting them.

the snake i get will most likely already be established on live rats, so im gonna have to watch it carefully when it eats. how do i stop the rat from biting if i dont have anything to distact it with? i'll look at reptile supply & see what they have...

Ok Im sorry I dont usually get aggressive, but useless post.
WHile you may have years and years of experience with what to do in this situation, the OP and others may not. IMO, if you dont know, then asking your peers is the best solution. Especially if you cant afford and dont know a reputable rept vet.
Normally I would just roll my eyes at something like this, but this event could not have been easy for the OP and it would be nice if people who disagree could at least show a little more compassion when they chime in.

and to Jason, excuse the shipyard out of me, but if I can save a snake, i will do it, if its within my means, as stated i told the guy it might live, after he told me to kill it, once he found that out he wanted to take it back to its bare 40 gallon cage, so i actually paid him for it, yea i can be stupd bt if it had a chance i was gonna ask the WISE, un arse people hear, once i heard the verdict, I did it sorry, if i cant be a pro like youi

You did the right thing Bowser and I'm personally glad that you started this thread just to show people what can happen if you don't feed your snake responsibly. I would actually suggest to the mods to maybe make a sticky out of this thread for educational purposes. This is why I'm glad my bp takes frozen rats. I never have to worry about the risk of feeding live. I know this particular situation was because the snake was left alone unsupervised with the rat, but I just still never liked the risk involved feeding live. I'm lucky mine has always been able to eat freeze/thawed. I know some BPs just won't take freeze/thawed so the owners have no choice. Anyway, sorry you had to go through that, and good job for doing the right thing by seeking advice from other responsible owners before doing anything.
