Like you, I keep spooked really quickly when it comes to my food. The first time I come across something that's not supposed to be there it's all over for me.
Lol totally same here. If I see something "not normal" in my food, I wouldn't be hungry anymore. I'm such a picky eater.. I always check for the expiration date ALWAYS. Lol plus I don't like trying new foods even if they look really good Dx

I ate at a quiznos one time and they forgot to take the plastic casing off of my slices of salami. I'm biting into it and getting these long thin plastic ribbons stuck in my teeth. I called them up and they just laughed saying 'oh yeah, that happens sometimes' Oh well, at least it wasn't a bug.

Especially cereal and other grain products, trust me a gnat is nothing.
Just tear that piece off, feed it to the dog(s) and finish the sandwich, problem solved.
You might not want to get a dart frog either cause the fruit flies never all stay in the tank. I have OCD but trust me after 7 years volunteering in a lab that raises frogs, gnats don't bother me near as much, they become a fact of life. One time I think some escaped from another lab cause we had an invasion of flying red eyed Drosophila that were definitely not from our stock.

gnats and bugs are everywhere. They are actually pretty clean. Don't go seeking them out, but don't be repulsed by them. We feed our herps insects yea (lizard peeps). They are great sources of protein and generally very good for your body. Over come your insect fear and eat it.

LOL. I couldn't count the number of bugs I have eaten, either on accident or on purpose. I guess I am the extreme opposite of a germ-a-phoebe though. I ticked off my wife once while she was making dinner. She said she was going to spit in my food for it. I told her go ahead, I spent six years as a cop, I am sure I ate someones spit in a burger at some point. :)
Now hairs freak me out. I got a hair on a pizza slice once from Dominoes. I never ate at that Dominoes again. I did work in the food industry while I was a kid. I worked at McDonald's and Dairy Queen, and a local restaurant. The Dairy Queen would have us sift through the trash to take any unused katsup packets out and put them back out for reuse. We also had to take out any of the food that was thrown away because the owner of the DQ would use it all to slop his hogs.
The McDonald's I worked at though was super clean I thought. I never once witnessed anything off beat or done wrong. Same with the restaurant I worked at.

Re: I'm just venting, you don't need to care.
I am not really surprised that there was a long hair in a Subway sandwich. They don't wear hairnets at my local one. I worked in a deli, and we had to wear our hairnets, and hats (baseball cap-ytpe) religiously. Sure, they made me look like an old washwoman, but hey, it's sanitary..
Gnats.. would indicate to me.. garbage sitting around.. or unwashed veggies. Or moldy stuff in the back. Not really a good sign. I am not really fond of Subway.. they re-use their knives, etc. from sandwich to sandwich.. a high risk for cross-contamination, if you ask me. But with anything, it's a location-by-location thing for me.
