To me, it doesn't matter if it's a pain to completely clean out the entire enclosure. I love cleaning enclosures, and I have no idea why. It's just exciting for me and I find it fun to clean out no matter how dirty and smelly the cage gets.

I use this stuff called "forest floor", I believe it's made out of coconut shells that have been pureed and compacted. It's really awesome because you buy it dehydrated and add water to make it expand. My snake loves it and I like the fact that it literally lasts forever before you need to buy more. It also looks really good in a tank and isn't that bad to clean up, but then again, I normally just pick out the dirty sections instead of cleaning the entire tank.

It really all depends on the snake. My anaconda I use cypress mulch because it retains humidity really good, but it's not the cypress mulch that most people buy in a big bag from lowes or wal-mart. I use the T-Rex cypress mulch which is double milled so it's a lot finer, and it's easy to spot clean when necessary.

On the other hand my rufous beaked snake, I use aspen, though I don't like it because my snake sometimes smells like aspen, he likes to burrow, and to me from personal experience, burrowing snake with cypress mulch = bad outcome.

Oooops, wrong name, Forest Floor is one of the first ones I tried, I use "Zilla Coconut Husk Brick Reptile Bedding" currently.

I have tried paper towel, newspaper, aspen and cypress bedding. I like cypress the best out of all of them.

I also use a coco peat substrate (aka eco earth) it is really cheap depending on where it comes from the natural growing place sells bricks (1 foot by 1 foot by 2 foot) for 8 bucks. It expands a lot that does 7 enclosures 3 changes each.

I used crushed coconut and I absolutely LOVE it! It keeps a nice fresh smell in my tank for a good while, and it holds a good bit of humidity. Fairly Cheap as well. I give credit to kitedemon, I think kite was the one that recommend it a week ago in a humidity post of mine. I could not be happier! :)

Before crushed coconut I was using fine ground fir, and it was a mess most of the time.
