I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I have several snakes that will either outright take a swing at me OR will show signs of stress if I hold them without washing my hands after petting my dogs or cats. My dogs are also rarely allowed in the snake room, but when they are in there both my woma and my blackhead will come to the front of their enclosures and get very active. It may not be affecting them adversely, but it is affecting them in some way.

Re: With Dogs?
In general you should not handle your snake without washing first, especially after petting a dog or cat. Their coats are full of all sorts of stuff I would not want to transfer to my snakes, Frontline/Advantage being a huge concern.
I always make my dog lay down and stay when I have the snakes out. She pretty much ignores their cages (and my geckos and tortoise) unless there is a lot of movement, then she will just give a quick sniff and walk away. She has come nose to nose with both snakes, no one seemed overly worried but I don't let that happen on purpose. She's still a young dog and sometimes her curiosity gets the better of her.

Hello, Im new here, currently have a year and a half red tail boa but am looking to get my kids into snakes and would rather them learn with a bp. Anyways, I have two pits and Im pretty sure if my snake struck at them I would have a heck of a time keeping them from killing it..... When I have him out though, they dont even pay attention to it. I dont take real chances and my dogs listen real well so if they run up on me, I just tell em to get back....they know

Hahaha! Thanks, everyone. I'm looking for a puggle, actually, so that probably wouldn't be a problematic dog breed.

Re: With Dogs?
Like posted , depends on the prey drive. I have a husky mix and he will kill just about anything. (He's great with people and other dogs). He sniffs the snakes and shows interest but thats it. I won't put the snake on the floor though.
The puppy won't know any better and be nieve about it. Just keep control of the situation til you can feel it out. It wouldn't stop me from getting either.
