    I wouldn't recommend any reusable substrate. The moment the defecate on it is the moment it goes bad. That stuff is impossible to clean and will always smell funky. Try paper towels.

    I would clean the tank with a mild bleach solution. Wash it out thoroughly so you cannot smell the bleach inside it anymore.
