Maybe you smelled like a rat? :D He might just associate you with dinner now, and got a little too excited... too funny, LOL.

I had to pull paper towel out of a hatchling's mouth last year as well--I think most substrates have a small bit of risk attached. I just learned to peek in on them when feeding to make sure everything's as it should be, whether I use paper towel or newspaper.
