    I used larger sterlite tubs for very young rats but I provided them chew blocks...it lasted for nearly 2 years until I placed one full sized male in there overnight.

    and there is less chewing if you have somethign to distract them...

    Except rats live in underground burrows, where they are kept cool and comfortable during the hot summer days, and come out at night to hunt/scavange.

    Rats do well kept at temps we like, they are prone to heat strokes if kept too warm. I've read many people say that they keep them at 65 year round. I prefer 72, when it gets above 80 I set a high velocity fan to run across the racks. (We don't have air conditioning or windows that could hold a window unit). If it gets into the 90's, I mist them all down with spritz of water. They love it.
