I found to keep the smell down quite a bit is only have as many males as needed. I have 14 female -1 male and he gets around LOL. You really don't need alot of males like some people think. Also keep the bedding dry as possible,leaks from water bottles can cause huge oder issues. What I do is set aside one coloney for younger culls and one and one that I want to grow up. I cull the number of rats pups off slowly so I have some at each size in the freezer
