    Now I assume by temp gauges you mean those dial thermometers. Well you have the right idea by moving them to the snakes level, but those kind of thermometers are really far from accurate. Sometimes they can be up to 10* off.

    I think it would be worth your while to invest in some digital thermometers that have a probe so you can get exact temp readings. If you have a UTH you need to measure how hot it is getting by placing a probe directly on top of it (on the glass) inside the enclosure. You will probably be a little surprised as to how hot they can get.

    That being said, you should be controlling all of your heat sources with a thermostat or a rheostat (dimmer) to make sure you don't cook your new friend :)

    I might be making a big assumption here but its better to be safe than sorry! You sound like a responsible keeper who wants to provide for your snake as best as you can!
