Re: Isn't this overkill??
I joined a great local rescue which is where I got my first snake from. It is $50 to join for the year, and you get basically free vet care then. The snakes there are really nice animals too, some high contrast JCPs, BRBs, etc... all $25 each. You just can't use them to breed, which is understandable.

I agree, that's pretty shady... but I encountered dog rescues that were just as picky, which is why I ended up just going to the pound (where I got my Rudy). One Aussie rescue rejected me because I worked 15-20 hours a week - and they said the owner should be home full-time. Whah??? Do they really think a dog can't handle being alone a few hours a day? I realize that particular dog had some separation anxiety, but how is he going to overcome it if you're home ALL day? Anyway, I do think some of them go overboard, which only hurts the animals in the end.

Sounds like a good group to make a BOI post about. (Or add to an existing one since I bet it's already there...)

Pretty much. There are no guarantees that you'll get the animal, but if you do get accepted (fat chance with how picky they are) then the $10 gets applied to the adoption fee.
It's like the CO House Rabbit Society here... they wouldn't even consider me because I own snakes. Never mind the fact that any rabbit but a newborn would be bigger than my snakes...

LOL. :D Some people are really ignorant about snake feeding... my friend was afraid to bring her (small) dogs over to my house, because "what if your snakes try to eat them?" Mmmmkay.
