The best answer i can give you on that is to make sure that your snake ALWAYS has fresh water. They won't drink if the water is in need of changing so that could be the only thing that you can control that will give your snake the optimal chance to stay as hydrated at possible.
I usually like to raise the humidity just to be sure that everything works out. I have always had perfect sheds doing this so i go by the "if it aint broke don't' fix it" rule.
Its a good time to start doing this stuff when you see the pink belly/cloudy eyes start to show. This is a sign sheds are coming!

Never tried this with my balls (out of context?) but when my JCP is in shed I spray some water in front of him and he starts drinking. I do this for a few days when he's in shed.

Like a couple of others, I have had perfect sheds without me doing much... here the humidity during the summer is usually in the 80% range everywhere!
Normally I bump humidity a day or so after I notice him in blue.

I raise the humidity after the eyes clear up from the cloud stage.......
