Re: Can humidity be too high?
The lids are clear plexi glass with holes. The substrate is not wet, or even damp to the touch. It is just a bit of fog near the top of the tank. It's almost gone now but I still would like to know what I need to use for the tank and such.
Re: Can humidity be too high?
Oh well if that's all it is then it's likely no real trouble. Add a few more holes.
Re: Can humidity be too high?
Okay. What is a good brand for a reliable humidity gauge?
Re: Can humidity be too high?
You could just go with an Acu-Rite from WalMart. It's not for reptiles specifically, it's for measuring temps and humidity for homes and gardens and so forth. Runs about $10.00, requires one AAA battery. Looks like this....

Re: Can humidity be too high?
Excellent!
I can just swing by and get that tomorrow. Is that safe to put in with the snake? He's a big boy and tends to crush things...Does it do temp, too?
Re: Can humidity be too high?
How you can use it is this. It comes with a little stand but that's about useless LOL. Get some velcro and stick it facing outward (so you can read it) just at or an inch above substrate level on your warm side. Use velcro NOT any kind of tape.
Run the probe on it's long, thin cord over to the cool side. You can either bury it in the substrate and just poke the probe out or lead it in and out of the enclosure if there's enough cord length.
Make sure you pushed the button on it though first to show the display like this...
IN - this is the temp the actual unit is reading (your warm side temp)
OUT - this is the temp the probe is reading (your cool side temp)
HUMIDITY - overall ambient humidity as read by the unit itself
Make sure it's not buried in substrate or you get funky readings. I always test the Acu-Rite by letting it sit in the room first. The unit and the probe should read identical temps and the humidity should be sensible to how your room feels.
If you can't find an Acu-Rite at your WalMart (it's usually in or near gardening or outdoor weather station area) try Lowe's or Home Depot. They sell a similar product under another brand name.
If you feed live prey in the tank, move that probe cord. Rodents ruin Acu-Rite probe cords LOL
If your snake manages to wet or crap on the Acu-Rite unit, wipe it with a baby wipe and let dry out completely, change the battery. Doesn't happen often but darn snakes will manage anything LOL
Re: Can humidity be too high?
Just checked walmart website. They don't have that one. They have this but it just wouldn't work unless I had two. Our Home Depot closed down (economy....). The closest thing Lowes has is this.... Ugh

Walmart had this.

Menards doesn't have a search option on their website but I'll try to look there tomorrow.
Re: Can humidity be too high?
Personally I'd just phone WalMart tomorrow and ask for gardening or outdoor weather station. I never trust a website to really show what's in a store. If you have problems locating one let me know and I'll have my husband check his store (he works at WalMart, handy for me ain't it LOL)
Re: Can humidity be too high?
Call them. Duh. It's been a hard week. My brain will start functioning sooner or later. lol.
Thanks!
I'm so excited! Just learning all this new information makes keeping snakes even funner. I really like the balls better than the corns. I never knew the thrill of several feet of snake trying to cut off all circulation to my arm until now...what I've been missing! :partyon:
Re: Can humidity be too high?
I had a 55 gallon tank. tried everything in the world to get humidity right. The answer ended up being so easy...
the key ingredients were:
UTH on dimmmer or thermostat
foil and taped the top
plain old newspaper for substrate
properly sized water bowl.
