    If so, you're gonna want a constant warm side, and a constant cool side.

    Initially, it started out with me just wanting a red light so I could turn out the room lights at night and still see the tank and my own surroundings. Otherwise, there'd likely be an overhead light on until 11pm every night... probably not enjoyable for a nocturnal snake. Petco had a ZooMed hood on clearance which has two incandescent fixtures in the center, facing away from each other, and a fluorescent which I'm not using. Now that I think about it, it's probably not such a great thing since, as you hinted at, it probably warms opposite sides in different ways when one is switched over to the other... however, there is always one side warmer than the other because of the UTH. I just worry about leaving him with only the UTH because the ambient temps in my room can get down to 72-74 and those crappy thermometers drop down to 75-77 when the bulbs are off.
