I think I ended up with the perfect solution. I have small holes on either side that I can cover or uncover with a sliding piece of plexi. In the middle, I cut a 5" x 5" square hole that I covered with hardware cloth. I can hang my ceramic heat emitter over this to regulate the ambient temp of the tank. I've hooked it up to a temperature controller so all should work out.

The tank is a tall 29 gallon which should work for the first couple of years. After that, I'm getting a couple of Reptile Basics cages with built-in heating and all the extras since I want to get a piebald and try breeding it with my spider for the fun of it. Waiting to see what hatches will be better than Christmas!!
