I use winamp classic. There's a skin that i've had for like 8 years that I always download when I have to update winamp. It's so easy, runs fast.

You have to go look for the actual files and then use your ipod as a giant flash drive. That's what I did when I switched computers.

When you import into iTunes it will probably be converting all of your music to mp3 or AAC. What I did since I wanted all mine as mp3's was to add them to the library instead of importing. Then I selected all and selected creat mp3 version. I let the computer run forever while it did this and then at the end the original ones I had selected were still highlighted so I right clicked and deleted all those. After this process I was left with all of my music in mp3 form. Not very convenient but it worked.

i hate itunes/ipods... i mean, they're great until you have to move soemthing around or change to a different format. sometimes i'll record guitar parts on a digi recorded and itunes wont upload them because they aren't copyrighted, etc etc. WMA files especially are a pain with itunes... which, to me, makes it more trouble than it's worth.

    Dittos.

I have a Sony NWZ-A728 with the 2.4" screen. I don't even have the software that came with it installed. Just drag and drop back and forth. Sooo easy. But then again, if you like proprietary stuff, by all means get an iPod.

I'd be pissed if mine took that long too. Mine took a few hours I think for about 7000 songs. It is kind of a pain to use iTunes in a windows OS but since I run OS X for the most part it works great for me.

I use a 120gb Zune because a Zune pass is only 15$ month for unlimited downloads. Technically you can go on a one month download spree then rip to mp3 as you get them. Over 40,000 songs here:).

Definitely a more cost effective way to go. With apple you are really buying the name. Apparently a lot of people are OK with that though.

Thats the reason I went with zune but some songs are not available for download with the zune pass, those songs I just don't download. The other thing that sucks with so much music is HD space. I'm using 135gb of my 250 external for just music backup.
