Might pay attention to what is classified as exotic in section 7:25-4.3.
(a) Exotic species and nongame species requiring a permit
for possession include, but are not limited to the following:
3. Reptiles:
i. Pythons - Family Pythonidae;
ii. Rat Snakes - Elaphe spp.;
iii. Boas - Family Boidae (other than Boa Constrictors)
iv. King Snakes - Lampropeltis spp.;
v. Racer - Colluder spp;
vi. Ringneck Snakes - Diadophis punctatus;
vii. Green Snakes - Opheodrys spp;
viii. Collared Lizard - Crotaphytus collaris;
ix. Monitor - Varanus spp.;
x. Skinks - Family Scincidae;
xi. Ameiva - Ameiva spp;
xii. Chuckwalla - Sauromalus obesus;
xiii. Alligator Lizard - Gerrhonotus spp.;
xiv. Geckos - Family Gekkonidae other than Tokay Gecko;

(b) The Department may issue a permit for the possession of
the above exotic mammals, birds, reptiles or amphibians, or
nongame species provided the applicant has satisfactorily met the
criteria contained within N.J.A.C. 7:25-4.7.

Re: getting first ball
Local pet shops should fill out the application for you if you buy something that needs a license/permit. Sometimes they mail it for you also. You then get paperwork from the state.
The big box pet stores will give you an info sheet with a phone number to call for info.
FYI, almost no one gets a permit. I had a permit years ago for a parrot and I paid the fee every year. I stopped paying the fee when the bird was gone. No one ever followed up to find out why. I had permits for the snakes also.
You should get the permit and pay the fee, just like I did and do. The money goes toward conservation programs. :salute:
