I've been looking around at fan sites and everything, so I guess the question is, how do you know that the Bengal is purebred? Are there physical characteristics to look for, or something that's really pronounced in the bengals that is missing in domestic cats?

Re: Bengal Cats
I think the only way to know for sure is to know that the parents are registered. As for characteristics, the closer to wild generation-wise, the more like bengals they will act. All domestic bengals are F4 or greater (for F3 or less you need a permit) and over the years they are getting further and further away from their Asian heritage and more toward American shorthair.
So, look for registry info on the animal you want to buy if you care a lot about genetics and behavior being predictably bengal-like.

My friend has two Snows! They look very similar to OneBreitGirl's pic above. Now, they are adorable cats, and very high energy. Very. They are both unneutered males and are brothers. I think that she plans on breeding them eventually..
They are.. did I say it already? VERY high-energy cats. They love to knock objects over, and are very playful and mischevious with each other and with people. Very outgoing cats too.. not afraid or intimidated by strange people at all as far as I can see. If you want playful balls of kenetic energy, then they are great.

Re: Bengal Cats
A friend of mine's neighbour died in a house accident, the family asked him to watch the cats while they settled her affairs... surprise, they never came back for them.
He has 1.1, and they are crazy cats! Had them for about a year before he realized they were not regular cats. He knew they were nutters, but did not know they were a special breed.
The female is fine, but the male is very timid, and drives them crazy. When he bolts to hide he pretty much takes out everything in his path (like a dog). If startled he can be very aggressive as well.
