I use a sponge in a deli-cup to help keep humidity up when needed. As long as you clean and microwave the sponge often, bacteria isn't an issue. I keep a perforated lid on the deli-cup, which allows humidity to be released, but also helps reduce exposure to airborne dust and bacteria. A sponge is reusable, whereas sphagum moss must be replaced often. The sphagnum moss alters the pH, but can still easily harbor bacteria. A dirty dish sponge with imbedded food matter is much more likely to harbor bacteria than a sponge that is cleaned and sterilized for a humidity increasing device.

I use long fiber Chilean sphagnum moss... like the type that orchid growers use. It is really really nice, smells great, looks good, and bumps humidity like no other!! :)

Oh to have a nest of damp long fiber Chilean sphagnum moss..... :P
