Anyone have any ideas on how to lock up a home made melamine rack. Its one of the ones that everyone on here builds their first time around. I want to put metal rods down the front of it, but I dont think there is enough space between the edge of the tubs and the edge of the melamine.

Any ideas of securing a rack like this would be greatly appreciated.

Call a security agent. Or go to somewhere like Radio Shak and talk to them about a security system. There are systems that call you when someone accesses the door(windows), ones that video constantly, or only when a breach is noted. Cameras can be outside and inside. Hook up outside cameras to motion sensors, and inside ones to the alarm system.
Be aware that in some areas you need to register your alarm system. This is so the cops don't get called in to fifty alarms without any info. If they get called and you did not register and it's a false alarm, you can get a fine. So register!
Helps having family in a security type business... they give loads of advice.

For securing a melemine rack, how about attaching a piece of metal with a loop that sticks out front of the rack? Then the bar would still block the bins from opening, and not interfere with the structure. It's not bullet-proof, but let's face it, there's not a lot out there that is.

I have an alarm system for the entire house. It makes me feel pretty safe, but there is a glitch... The sensors are triggered if a door or window is opened. Someone could still just break the window and climb through. So I will be getting window laminate that makes windows impossible to break through. It's great stuff! Also, door locks (on the knob or deadbolts) can be "hacked"- it's called lock-bumping. The good news is that there are locks on the market now which are "bump-proof". They do cost more but it's worth it.

As for your rack... If I were going through the effort of breaking into a house to steal some snakes I would probably just carry (with a couple friends) the entire rack out the door. If that's impossible then I would pry apart the shelves or rip an entire side off. It would be almost impossible to secure, so do everything you can to keep people from getting inside the house to begin with!

Let me tell you about deadbolts....they are worthless. With a little (and I mean little) know how, a leather man, and less than 30 seconds, most deadbolts can be defeated.

Dont spend all of the money on the "spy" stuff. Go to costco or sams. They have high quality (certainly not top shelf, but they are good) camera systems witha DVR. Place one that gives you a good view of your driveway and one that has a good view of the area you are worried about.

Get motion sensor lights for the outside. Not too expensive and they work to deter crime.

See if there is a cop who would be interested in renting from you. Consider offering a reduced rent for the security presence a patrol car parked in your driveway would bring.

Get some timers and set them on different things. TV and lights coming on at random intervals. Change it up on a regular basis.

IMO, telling cops about their drug activities might make them suspect you ratted on them, and might provoke them to really do something stupid on your property. Especially you just kick them out with the same reason? wait for a while..

About security, the above suggestions are good, dead bolts, motion sensor, etc.. but I wonder what if you "hang" a sign in your rack that says,

"(their names here) I got you druggies! don't do anything stupid because you are under surveillance". :taz: of course they won't see this if they are not in your property. Besides they are more paranoid than you if they are on drugs.
