That's exactly the same thing my supervisor said.

I understand that dilemna...I work nights and get that $1 shift differential, so when a day shift promotion comes up unless I get more than a dollar raise I'd actually be taking a pay cut. Not to meniton night shift vs. day.... I know what you mean about more laid back. No bosses... less people... less bs...

However, it really depends on where you want to go. You will have a higher earning potential eventually with a promotion, even if now the money wouldn't be all that much more.

If this is somewhere you planned to stay long term - go for the promotion. If you are there temporarily then keep the easier job on nights until you're ready to go somewhere else.

I agree. I've been in IT for 10+ years. Take the advancement. I made the mistake staying somewhere for too long (1999-2004) because of the laid back atmosphere and ability to do my own thing when I wanted. It cost me quite a bit of money and held my career back a little.

Just my 2 cents...

I think a lot of this depends on where your passion lies. If you love your work, are passionate about it, and want to remain in the field, then the promotion is worth it in the long run.

If, on the other hand, this is just a job and is lacking your passion, it doesn't really matter.

There is so much potential in one's lifetime that spending so many hours without having much passion for what they do seems...wasteful.

Who are you and where are your passions??? Perhaps looking inward will help you to look outward.

Yep, the 9-5 schedule would be the deciding factor for me. I don't know if you're single or what, but my screwed up work schedule keeps me away from the rest of the population.

Not what I wanted but they did cover the shift diff and a tiny bit more.

But like some of you said a raise is a raise no matter how much and that it usually benefits in the future.
