I have one of those bloodhound sense of smells as well -- kicked in when I got pregnant and never went away. I'd love to smell something other than snake in the snake room but on the other hand -- I don't like perfumey stuff and I've been told room sprays aren't really good to be using in a snake room - can't remember why and don't know if the little Febreeze thing would also apply but if it works I might give it a try :gj:

Tosha, I can't say how this particular Febreeze thing smells but their general line of products is not flowery or perfumey in nature. I'm very allergic to anything that has a strong perfume or flower scent and I've found their sprays to be one of the few on the market I can use to freshen up a room or spray on the couch, etc.

I have only ASFs and change bedding every week, but my wife can always smell them (she is pregnant). I have one of the air freshners right outside the door that sprays every 9 minutes, But since it is Fall our local grocery store (Publix) starts carrying the cinnamon brooms which are GREAT for making the whole house smell great and they are only $3.

I picked up one of the air filters about 2 weeks ago. I was planning on writing a review of it but I am still testing it out. It is pretty simple... just a small fan that pulls air through a charcoal filter.

It does not add any fragrence to the air... the charcoal filter just consumes the odor.

Verdict is still out for me. It seemed to make a big difference when I first turned it on.. but now two weeks later the difference isn't as noticable. Will report back once I have more time to test.

One alteration I made.... If you take off front cover after using it for awhile you will see dust lines where the vents are. to make a long story short, because of the way the vents are ony a small percentage of the filter is actually being used. I cut out the entire middle section of the plastic strips exposing almost the entire filter. BIG improvement in air flow and percentage of filter being used.

here is a picture of the alteration I am talking about. Highly recomend doing this if you do pick up one of these filters. It still securly holds the filter.... but obviously uses a much larger percentage of the filter. You can see the dust lines on it from where the vents used to be.

It uses activated charcoal and yes it works amazingly for smells. Heck, for cheap you just buy some pieces of activated charcoal, drop it in tupperware and it works just as well as a filter. Activated charcoal has a ridiculous amount of surface area and grabs up every freaking odor in the room, people use it in refrigerators all the time if something goes bad and the fridge smells a little...

I know I'm new to herps and don't breed rodents but believe me I've dealt with ridiculously hideous smells before and activated charcoal gets rid of EVERYTHING.

I've been using this for the last month, and I LOVE it. You just need to remember to change the filters for it to be effective.

I also noticed the same issue that Mike did, about not utilizing the majority of the filter. I may have to try that little fixit, and see how it works. There is no added smell, just less of the BAD one. I also use the little boxes of baking soda as well. I may have to try some bowls of the activated carbon as well. The less smell the BETTER!

Bowls of baking soda help but activated charcoal is tons better. Like WAY better. If you've ever seen the food network special on how to remove fridge odors they break it down really cookie cutter how activated charcoal works and how much better it is than baking soda.
