Wow that looks beautiful! I'm still waiting for my 40 long breeder tank to get here so he'll have good hides instead of news paper and other crap. I put some moss in to help with humitity...

Cool, I was just wondering about belly rot. I don't know enough about it to say that it could happen in that set up. I have just read a lot of different threads on this site and they talk about conditions that are to damp, and how that can lead to belly rot. :confuzd:

as a new owner i pretty much worry about every little thing but I would like to know from a more experienced keeper how the substrate should feel to the touch, i assume bone dry is also no good mines damp enough to be darker in colour but not much more.

I am not an experienced keeper but most use paper towels, aspen, or newspaper. I do not know that you coud tell from the "feel". My humidity runs 75 to 80 in the summer, and that is a bit high, but with aspen and paper towels I don't worry about too much build up, her skin should be fine and no scale rot.

I would be a bit concerned over the dampness level of that setup too.

I don't know how effective damp soil is for a ball python.

If a ball python is stuck on anything even slightly damp for a long period of time, it can cause major scale rot and RI issues because the humidity is too high.

It looks like a pain to clean or tell where the deification is too.
