Re: Kiss your Hobby Goodbye Part 2
Somebody must be lobbying the politicians to take this position. But who and why would they try to start something lke this? What's the agenda here?
Re: Kiss your Hobby Goodbye Part 2
The reality is there are some animals that do negatively effect the enviroment and at times some industires. There are several types of fish that when introduced have taken over and destroyed natural populations, at times affecting fishing or certain ecosystems for example. In CA(and other states) the brown trout which were brought from Europe have taken over and eliminated many native trout species. Snakeheads have also been a problem in many areas.
In Australia so many cows were introduced in tremendous numbers causing irreversable damage to the ecosystem by wiping out grasslands and causing all kinds of unnatural erosion which affected the food chain for many native species.
With this in mind there are some cases where long term damage has been done and some control needed.
That said it is important that legislators are given accurate information so that other animals such as snakes and birds are not blanketed or included in new laws because some people in Washington think they are a threat or are subject to closed minded predjudice. Pet snakes and many other animals are not a dangerous but there is always the concern that this could be used to outlaw animals that some may feel are undesirable(evil) and therfore manipulated to be called a threat to the almighty dollar.
So I guess the real question is what is there agenda? and how can we protect the animals that we love that are not a threat to our ecosystems and agricultural industries?
Thats where educating and representing our cause comes into play. There are many organizations(like PIJAC) that will fight for our rights and it is very important to support them so our voices are heard and laws are passed or not passed for the right reasons.
Legislators have a way of generalizing situations and passing laws that over step ther intended goals and effect larger numbers than needed.
Lets not let this happen:salute:

Also, importers or people with interests have no later than 60 days after the enactment to give proposals for approved species to be on this "list" with supporting documentation!?
So yea... just a front for some stereotypical legislation to take away our rights.
Connie they seem to indicate that they are seeking the opinion of Native Americans on this matter and seemingly give extra weight to the viewpoint of said people for some reason that escapes me. Perhaps you should tell them what you think about this subject.

If I could I would! So far my tribe has never recognized me as Indian, and they haven't had open enrollment for decades I believe. Anywho, that's all the way in CA.
Honestly, I believe the farthest they would go for inquiring from tribes is asking the BIA, I would be greatly surprised if they went to the chairmen and tribal leaders themselves unless they had a controlling interest of land in a county. (Say Mount Pleasant for example)
I understand the need for species control, but it seems to me that the legislators are trying to fix a problem that isn't there. From what I understand, our laws and regulations that are in place now are all covering the problems, and that anything that has destroyed large parts of our ecosystem was done well before there were any such laws in place to prevent them.
So yes, where is the agenda here but to take us a step closer to 1989?
If they are TRULY trying to learn about each species and it's impact, they will need more than 36 MONTHS to gather ALL relevent information, and not just what they have at hand.

I agree somewhat to what they are trying to do here. Importing can have a very bad effect on us but lets look at this, we are a group of people that love snakes and some of us have quite the collection. If they were to limit how many non native animals come into the U.S. I would back that up completely. I have 1 bp as of now and plan on getting a lot more. I'm going to be getting them from breeders here in the U.S. thus removing the need to import. I can go to one of my local pet shops and see an imported animal there then go back 6 months later and the same animal is still there. I Think we are importing way more then what we are buying up. I still think what these people are trying to do is wrong by banning all non native animals. If it does go through I expect to see everything gone including cats and dogs not native or that proves our government is just plain corrupt.

Except, this isn't just for ball pythons, it's for ALL animals. All of them! Mammal, avian, fish, insect, everything.
There are quite a few species out there that are not captive bred and you can only get them wild caught.
