While I don't have any personal experience with arboreals (yet, they're definitely on my list ;) ), I was under the impression that they generally don't drink from standing water anyway -- whether it's substrate or a water bowl. I've always heard they prefer to take beads of water off the glass or their own body, or dripping from leaves, kind of like a chameleon.
Edit: just glanced at the caresheet listed above and it also mentions this
Re: Thinking of getting a emerald tree boa
They do drink from thier coils, but i've also watched all my chondros drink from the water bowl during thier late night prowlings and my atb as well. Also especially with with young arboreals there is also the possibility of drowning. Personally i just wouldnt take a chance. Just my opinion. Good luck.:gj:
Re: Thinking of getting a emerald tree boa
i too have watched mine drink from her bowl. i was wondering about the water substate and would never do it. the care sheet says for the young ones to keep them over water. not a good idea IMO
Re: Thinking of getting a emerald tree boa
my emerald drinks from him water bowl quite a bit. its up top by his perches though, sticking to the glass. also, water as a substrate isnt good. I also keep a paper towl at the bottom, but have a hard time with humidity so i have a bowl of bark and moss (thats screened over) that i have to change frequently but it helps a lot.
Re: Thinking of getting a emerald tree boa
why screened over? i have cypress as a substrate for my chondro and never have had a problem.
Re: Thinking of getting a emerald tree boa
just a safety precaution. im sure its not a must but when i first got him he would go down to the bowl and coil on the edge. just to prevent him from wanting to drink from it, somehow ingest it or anything else. its that really soft almost paper-like screen

I picked up a pair from Rico Walder - Signal Herpetoculture earlier this year - and can't begin to tell you that all the negative press ETB's get - is garbage.[
These 2 eat, poop, and are very well dispositioned.
Both have finally turned green - and have huge amounts of white - should make for some nice high white babies!
