Michigan around here is all farms and woods. Big farms little farms, lots of trees. My best friend came from a farming family, they are some of the goofiest people I know, but let me tell you they are the friendliest people around.

Sounds like you have pretty much decided already. I think it's great that you have that determination and love for a carreer. Heck I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. No doubt you will find a way to make it work for yourself. I grew up on a farm. It's a lot of hard work, dusk till dawn, that sort of thing. And you can never go anywhere so vacations are out of the question.

I have a friend who was a farmer and now he is wealthy beyond his wildest dreams. He just sold his farm to a big box retailer.

It seems to definitely be your passion so I would definitely go for it. My grandfather and my aunt are the same way. My great grandfather used to own a ton of land that he used to farm on (until he went a little crazy and sold it all off.....literally :(). But my grandfather had enough land left to have a few huge gardens and my aunt even grows a ton of flowers in her huge green house, all from seed that she had saved from years past. I can't seem to grow anything but weeds (LOL) but I understand that passion for growing things. Even if the farming itself may not be that profitable, there are always side things you could do as well. Like someone else mentioned, raising animals or around here a big thing is boarding horses. There used to be a ton of farmland around here for people to keep their own horses, but that was 20 years ago and it is not like that anymore. But I would also second getting the experience in on an established farm before venturing into your own.

But definitely aim for your dreams. I am sure that there will be someway that you could make it work. It will just take a lot of hard work and effort, but I am sure that it would be worth it in the end!! Good luck!!

I see and feel your passion. That being said, I would without doubt get a college education first, whether it be in agriculture, biology, or whatever. I would even recommend going on for a Master's degree in your chosen field. This way you always have something to fall back on if the farming business does not succeed or if you ever change your mind about farming. It is much harder to get a college education as one gets older due to additional responsibilities and time constraints in one's life.

With a college education many more doors to success are opened for you. It is something that can never be taken away from you. And it gives you a very large advantage over other individuals that don't have a college education when applying for a job.

Good luck in all of your future endeavors!!!
