The key is to feed live responsibly. I imagine that many of those horror stories posted are ignorant owners who just dumped a mouse/rat in there and left it in there for a while.
There are some snakes who will only eat live; do the people over there suggest that those snakes should starve for not eating f/t? I've tried to get all my snakes on f/t. All of the corns and ~75% of the bps eat f/t. But I have a couple that will have nothing to do with it, so they get live. I feed them responsibly and haven't had any incidents.
