Newbie to site

SherriX2, how are you keeping humdity in the screen top cage? I have one baby red tail in a 20gal glass terrarium with screen top, but living in AZ gives me next to no humidity so I have put layers of tin foil down on the top of the screen top and taped it up with black duct tape, its worked great for me (I think there is a link somewhere on here where I found out how to do that, but I cannot find it right now). Aspen bedding is another great way to keep humidity up in the cage (I do not use it for my larger boas because of how large their cages are, but I use it on my baby boas/pythons), I just use a spray bottle and spray my little red tails cage every couple of days and it keeps humidity at the right level.

If you found mites on the snake, there will be more where that came from. I would suggest buying some Provent-A-Mite online, I had a big mite problem with my rescue boa but after getting Provent-A-Mite I haven't had any problems. I've tried some other mite relief products from Pet Co. and neither of them worked for me.

Thats great that he is eating! I can't tell from the pictures but the snake does not look dehydrated to me.. I've seen a snake that was dehydrated once and its eyes kind of dipped in somewhat - but there could always be something I'm not seeing

The only other thing I would suggest if covering up 2-3 sides of the glass with newspaper to give the little guy some security while hes getting settled in.

Hey Sherri, I just noticed the ring you wear above your wedding rings. Too funny- I have my wedding band down in the usual place and have my engagement ring up where you have the little band :gj:

its strange,I used to "try" to wear them the other way around but everyone told me I had them on backwards! My diamond always slips to the side,guess I need it sized a little smaller.

No silly, not most bci's.... You're so funny!! In utero (in egg-ero for our egg laying friends?) the default sex is female unless and until hormones are released by the mother. So, we all start off as females... I'm sure this is the same for boas. If not, I'll still call it a she because GIRLZ RULE!!!!! :P

Sherri, I don't want to scare you away or make you think that you'll need to sell one of your kids in order to afford this act of kindness. I won't lie either- the initial set-up will make you think you need to sell one of your kids ;) But after the cage and heat source and t'stat, everything else is just nickel and dime. Also, you can buy rats on-line in bulk in various sizes and that helps with the cost. I really like The Mouse Factory (http://www.themousefactory.com/rates/rates.html) but I have so many snakes that I went with Big Cheese (http://www.bigcheeserodents.com/Pricing.html) this time--- Ugh, a very far second to the Mouse Factory :(

I'm not sure what my humidity level is at.I took the humidity reader out of my gecko's cage,it was really stuck to the cage and I had to pull really hard and I broke it :( So now I need to buy 2 (one for each cage)

The tank she is in,is the same tank it was living in at the pet shop so the back and sides of the tank are painted black.

My gecko is in my old bearded dragon 60 gallon reptile cage (its wayyyyyy to big for 1 leapord gecko) but to keep his temps up, I use a beach towel to hold his heat in.buts its easier because his heat lamp hangs inside the tank (high enough that he cant touch it) but with my snake I cant use anything across the whole top because her heat lamp sits on top of the cage (she can reach the lamp and push the top off if I put the light hanging in the inside)

where can order Provent-A-Mite and do u know how long it takes? how long can she go with mites on her?

Just look on-line for other places too. Mites are a pain in the tail to snakes and stress them out. It's good to take care of this as soon as you can.
An Acu-rite thermometer/hygrometer is a good thing to use since those measuring dials are always wrong. Acurites are digital and can be found for about 12 dollars at places like Lowes, Wal-Mart, etc.
Snakes are escape artists and so Edie brought up a good point about needing to have the lid really clamped on tightly, or a couple of bungee cords maybe?????

Have you thought about using heat tape or a heat pad? Using one of those with a thermostat will be the most accurate way to keep the snakes basking spot at the right temperature.. That way you could tape up the screen top too to make sure humidity is correct (Like Starmom said, the temp/humidity gauges from Lowes work really well, they will tell you ambient temps/basking temps/ and humidity).

My Provent-A-Mite took about 4 business days to get to my house after ordering, a couple days doesn't matter, because in the end you will end up with the only product that really works.
