She looks fantastic Ed, great job we did with her! Sure makes one think though about doing a quick check on the inside of hides to just make sure they don't have a burr like yours did and cause this sort of injury. I'm so glad she's fully healed and that eye looks just perfect again. :)

Yes indeed in the first photo the eye actually looks punctured and in the last photo perfectly fine. A happy occurrence.

Yes as am I I was more scared that an infection would set in and we would be battling that.

I have since throw all of them out and have gone to using the kitty litter hides or the black ABS hides

Yea you should have seen me I was shaking I was so upset. But shes all healed now so its all good.

This is what corneal edema looks like. We have to apply ophthalmic ointment to his eye 3X a day for the next 21 days. It is only in the one eye on him. If the ointment does not work they will have to use a needle and try to suck it out and their is a posibility if we have to go that route that it could cause blindness. His sister also has it, not half as bad, but in both eyes. We are doing the ointment with her as well. They came in this way and initially we thought it was retained eye caps. After their second shed we took them to the vet since things were not getting better and the above is the diagnosis.

I had a similar problem about 3 years ago. The difference with mine, is that it was self induced. I had a normal female that I believed had a stuck eye cap. Well I sprayed her down, and let the water soak for about 30 minutes. I went back after the water had time to soften the cap, and removed what I thought was the eye cap. It wasn't a retained eye cap, and what I ended up removing was the protective covering of the eye. After about 3 days, her eye looked like the one in your first photo (minus the cut). I freaked out, propbably about like you, and thought she would be permantly damaged in that eye. Low and behold, after 2 sheds, you coulnd't tell anything was ever wrong. Lesson learned here, was to ensure you have a stuck eye cap before trying to remove what you think is a cap, and may not be.

I am very leery about messing with their eyes because there is such a fine line between help and injury. It went against everything in me to not try and treat the eye with something. But I was told to just leave it alone and watch for infection and keep her tub super clean.

The part that really kept me going was that her pupil stayed responsive to light and she would focus on me any time I looked at it even when it was cloudy.

I am just in aw of how well these animals when cared for properly how resilient they are. I am learning leaps and bounds every week with these things.

I just chalk this up on my experience board and keep the notes I took.

So far I've had burns, rat bites, RI's, internal parasites, granualoma's, regurge, this eye thing.

It is true the more you have the more you see.

Maybe the truest statement I have read in a long while. I see smoething I have never experienced before at least once a week. It is how we continue to learn. Fortunately, they are resilient, so that they can remain healthy whilst we are still learning.

They are amazing animals. Ed, if you'd ever seen the absolute mess of Saoirse's eyes when we got her - well you'd never believe there could be two functioning healthy eyes under so many layers of old stuck and hardened caps. Adam cautioned us to soak her and so forth but not to start hauling at those caps. Lo and behold, soaking took off a few layers and subsequent good sheds got rid of the rest and Ms. Saoirse had two beautiful, bright eyes under there. You just never know what they are capable of given the right care. :)

My Samson shed recently but I can't tell if the eyecaps came off or not (newbie:P)

I'll leave it until he sheds again then have a close look at the shed:gj:
