I know what you mean. I was cleaning tubs this week and weaning different litters. I was moving the weaners into a clean tub when the tub fell off of the rail, I caught 4 right away, but we had 3 more run into the closet. I believe it was only 3 escapees, but the traps are up anyways. I'd hate to have any rat alone anyways, but I'd hate even more for a loose rat in the house.

Can you imagine if ASF got loose! :O I think those little buggers could take over the world!
Re: Rats being adopted as pets
SPEAK OF THE DEVIL! I had written that I had a funny feeling that I did not get all of the weaner escapees. Well, my feeling was so strong, I took an hour for lunch.
I went straight to the rat room and started to pull things away from the walls, unload the closet, etc. I got out this big flash light, and saw a nice little pile of baby poo in different corners of the closet. I followed these little turds to the rat rack, and found a few here and there scattered in between the levels. I started one by one checking the levels of the racks and finally saw a little black weanling staring back at me. Luckily he was on an empty level, so I pulled out the bins and grabbed her.
She was dehydrated and non resistant from being on the run for 3 nights, but she is now back in with her litter.
Now I'm going to be haunting that room making sure I got them all. I'll probably even make the cat spend the next few nights in there.
On a side note, I apparently left my front door open and almost lost the cat!
Re: Rats being adopted as pets
So glad that you found her!!!! Hopefully that was the only one that was still out!
Re: Rats being adopted as pets
we currently have four pet rats and they are most certainly part of the family!! we just lost one recently to pneumonia and the whole family was heart broken. they are like very small dogs, they do tricks and use the litter box.
Its a very sad story all the way around
