Re: Wow... What an ego boost at the Job!
yea we are doing it right at the petco i work at i mean we have people comeing from petsmart saying that the people down there are rude and they come to our store we only have 3 people on a shift and they always find help. thats one of our biggest things is helping people and working with the animals.
Re: Wow... What an ego boost at the Job!
Congrats on your future promotion! I'm sure you will do great!
I agree that Petco is only as bad as the managers and the associates working at each one. Like any pet store, there are good Petcos/Petsmarts and there are bad ones.

Don't apologize for working at PetCo. First off, it's good, honest work and there's never a reason to apologize for getting out there and earning a living while also going to school. Secondly, here in Toledo, PetCo is the best pet store around. The disgusting mess seen in our local privately owned pet stores is beyond belief (one was closed down...YAY!). PetCo may not do it right in all their stores, but here in Toledo they are doing a very nice job.
Thanks Jo, and I agree. Although there are so many horror stories about the pet store chains, and the "temporary housing" is obviously not up to par for permanent housing, as long as care and attention are given to the situation, the animals can not only survive but within reason thrive during their stay. As far as balls are concerned, the only negative effect on them their housing has during their short stay with us, is making them rather temperamental. We have a very high rate of biters and I believe thats from there being multiple snakes in a cage, and being pestered by kids banging on the glass. But aside from that I've only had a few non-eaters, and most of them have complete sheds. The big problems arise when someone sells a snake and gives our guidelines out to a customer saying the snake will be ok in those conditions for the rest of it's life. Which is an obvious no-no.
As far as their being so many in one cage... that's the only feasible solution. Once you take into account how much the company pays out just to have someone scrub the tanks once a week (twice in other departments), feed the snakes, and heat etc, and multiply that by how many weeks it takes to sell a shipment of balls, and the department would quickly hit red ink if each snake had it's own cage. And once that happens, the company stops selling the animals, and a large basis of new enthusiasts never join the hobby, putting a huge stopper to the popularity of the ball python (or other species). Sadly that's why most stores are cutting back or no longer carrying pacman frogs.... because generally we sell 1 a month and when you sell them for $32, then your actually losing money by the buttloads. Sad reality of the herp world.
But then again... thats just my take. Thanks for the compliments... The more I think about it, the more enticing it sounds. No longer deep-cleaning all the reptiles and small animals (three deep cleans a week), and a massive cut-back on register time. Means although a lot more paperwork, but much more time with customers. Which is, afterall, the main reason for me choosing PetCo to work at.
