    Don't know for sure, but it sounds kind of like he's triangulating. Because their eyes are on the sides of their heads, they don't have visual depth perception, and will move their heads from side to side to triangulate your position.

    How much does your friend know about snakes? From what I've seen about the rest of this story, it doesn't seem like much. Would he know that a big snake yawn and jaw adjustment is normal? Or could that be the "holding his mouth open" that was seen?
